St. Paul lists drunkenness as a sin alongside fornication and adultery.

Being drunk is an absence of virtue. A deficiency of temperance. If you seek out drunkenness, it is sinful. If you accidentally drink too much, say a prayer of repentance and don't do it again.

Wedding feasts usually lasted about 7 days. Eating & sleeping were involved too. So I'm not so sure anyone was unacceptably drunk.

Buzzed & happy yeah, but I never got the impression it was a boozefest.

They were buzzed, not necessarily 3 sheets to the wind. The idea that one would usually serve the good wine first indicates the reasoning is, that after a few glasses of wine, one is lubed and can't tell the difference.

Hey, lets be honest, I have been to umpteen Irish Catholic weddings and the Priest is always invited to the reception and dinner. I have seen Priests drink and believe you me, they like their cocktails as much as the next person. :D

I think I was right regarding the word "drunk" cuz in John 2:9-10 says (in other versions)
9 When he tasted it, the water had become wine. He did not know where the wine came from, but the servants who had brought the water knew. The master of the wedding called the bridegroom10 and said to him, "People always serve the best wine first. Later, after the guests have been drinking awhile, they serve the cheaper wine. But you have saved the best wine till now."
It doesn't say they were drunk, it says they had already been drinking. Like I said, "drunk" is past tense of drink when used as a verb. I highly doubt Jesus would go against scripture and help people get drunk. Like it says in Galatians 5:21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

Yes, nothing worse than being around a bunch of drunks. I agree with you there! (But, I do realize I should pray for them instead of getting frustrated with them!)

Yes we should. But yucko. ^_^ Not them, the effects.

I don't mind happy relaxed people. A buzz basically. The drunk part I can do without.

Yes, I don't like the personality changes that people have when drunk. The nicest person can do the worst things when drinking. I say if you need to "loosen up", pray about it! (And the "yucko" parts are the worst! The staggering, vomiting, yelling--I'll pass!)

But, I do need to pray for them more. That's for sure!:crosseo:

How is being drunk a sin, whenever, Christ gave more wine to already intoxicated and drunk persons at the Wedding-feast at Cana?

By knowingly and willfully getting plastered.

How do you know anyone at Cana was drunk?

Where does that assumption come from?

I read that back then that wine was recommended for drinking because the water was of such poor quality......that you were better off consuming the wine but I could be wrong.

Water made people sick because it got contaminated and people didn't know to pasteurize it to kill the pathogens.

Virgil just don't get hammered. Its so unbecoming and you are such a decent guy I cannot imagine you being drunk anyway. I'm sure if you want to go get a little buzzed it isn't the same as being hammered or blacking out and puking in the porcelain throne.

I can't see it as a sin to throw back a couple...or a few....moderation is key.

Ah okay. I wasn't quite sure what I read or heard but I knew it was better off drinking alcohol than water back then because of how bad water ^_^^_^^_^

Indeed, I have heard that the wine was less potent back then. Paul (and other parts of the Bible) makes it perfectly clear that being drunk is sinful. The question is, what do they mean by drunk? Is buzzed drunk? Is drunk only being unable to control yourself? This is a difficult question to answer.

Wine was primary back then because clean water was not so abundant. It was necessary because it was clean and lasted longer without spoiling.

God does not consider fermented spirits to be pure. Such is a reason of unleavened bread.
Drunkenness is a nature of weakness in faith and commitment, relying on a substance rather then spirit to ease the mind.

I believe it intails intentional intoxication. DRUNKENNESS

Thanks for the nice advice, Brikkz. :)

I am not the best with words. I try. You're always offering advice in spiritual matters with such humility I wanted to take a stab at it. I don't have any scriptural backing but I guess my impression of the wedding was the people were making merry at least and they had had their fill......
It might not be depicting drunkenness but I am sure a few people had that warm fuzzy feeling after.

IF that's all you're looking for and not to be throwing yourself on the floor or dancing on your neighbor's patio furniture lol........you'll be okay.

I just cannot picture you acting in that manner  You got a wedding feast to attend??^_^

Maybe not everyone, but it is implied that many were drunk, otherwise there would have been no need for a miracle.

The bible is full of contradictions, this is just one of them.

there are no contradictions in the bible, only misunderstandings, if you misunderstand something feel free to google it, lot of great stuff out there. Anyway my understanding as to why wine was drank a great deal back then was because the water was so unclean, and wine being alcohol was actually better for them. As far as being drunk I think it's a sin because our body doesn't belong to us, it belongs to the Lord and also because of the self control reason another user gave.
