How does one get a clean heart?

What do you think? Is it by serving God, living a faithful life through helping our neighbour? Is it through reading the Bible? Through prayer, fasting? Maybe abstaining from sin? Attending church? Trusting in Christ alone? Asking for forgiveness? All of it maybe? Jesus says this to the Pharisees:

Matthew 23
25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.

Luke 11
39 Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but inside of you, you are full of robbery and wickedness. 40 You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give that which is within as charity, and then all things are clean for you.

4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

I attended one foot washing and that was decades ago when I was with the Freewill Baptist. I hated the thoughts of going and almost didn’t. They had regular service with communion afterwards and then broke out the basins. There was a wonderful clean spiritual sensation afterwards.

The words Jesus declared can cause change in persons “heart” (mind), so that he renounces evil deeds and becomes righteous.

If your heart is bad, how can you do anything good? You must be born again by the regenerating power of the Holy Spirit. This is an independent act of God upon the sinner, whereby he changes the disposition of his mind, heart and will toward himself. How does one get a clean heart? When they are regenerated.

I have also been to foot washing in church. I think it was nice, but I have much of an caretaker mentality.

I don't have a clear answer. I know my rebirth and my heart was washed clean. Then things happened and my heart got mudded up.

To get his feet washed by Jesus... He didn't want his Lord to do something like that. He didn't feel worthy.
