If you are excommunicated, do you still go to church and take part in confession and everything, just not receive communion or does it mean you are basically kicked out of the church? If you want to come back to the church after being excommunicated do you just have to go to Confession or do you have to re-enter the church? How does it work?

About excomunication itself it means you cannot partake in any sacrament but confession.
In these times it is rare for a person to be 'officially' excomunicated, most often they excomunicate themselves.
To rejoin the Church you have to go to confession, the confessor could instruct you to go to see the bishop who would want to be sure you are honest in your return to the Church.

There are nine automatic excommunications if I remember right. Being a Mason is not one of them. The 1984 Canon Law no longer automatically excommunicates Masons, but if a Catholic is a Mason he is barred from the Sacraments.
Of the Nine automatic excommunications the last three refer to actions of a priest. They nine are:
1) Heresy
2) Schism
3) Apostasy
4) Procured completed abortion
5) Desecration of the Eucharist
6) Physical attack upon the Pope
7) a priest violating the Confessional Seal
8) a priest absolving his accomplice in a sexual sin
9) a bishop consecrating a new bishop without papal permission
Excommunications can be lifted if the person repents and desire reconciliation. Some excommunications are reserved to the Holy See, others may be lifted by the bishop or any confessor priest.

Well, I am sure it has to do with intent. If something happens on accident, then of course that person would not be excommunicated. But if a person drops it on the ground on purpose, then proceeds to step on it or something, then I think that would be one example of desecration.

This reminds me of something.Bradford said:

Then he proceeded to give out the Eucharist to some of the students. Then he took a piece of Eucharist, broke it, dropped it, and stomped it.
I swear about half of the crowd, was about to get up and punch him. The other half turned to their neighbor and said that it must be unconsecrated bread. Which it was, it wasn't consecrated.
He then went on to say that he was proud of us that we were so upset over what he did, but he then went on to say that what he just did with the Eucharist was what we were doing with the Sacrament of Marriage in today's society.
It got the point across, I am not sure if it was the proper thing to do. But anyways, this reminded me of that.

This can be answered by quoting Canon Law 1367:Bradford said:
"A person who throws away the consecrated species or takes or retains them for a sacrilegious purpose incurs an "latae sententiae" excommunicatoin reserved to the Apostolic See.."

That was an excellent object lesson. I will remember this one. And, unconsecrated bread is just bread and nothing more.proud2bcatholic said:
How this relates to excommunication? If a person steals unconsecreted bread, he has NOT committed a sacrilege even though his intent was to do so, and thus no automatic excommunication would take place.
