I'll take a stab at this:

Read the Word, pray, call out to Him. Act upon the Holy Spirit's prompting. Choose NOT to fear, and instead to trust Him. Sing to Him. Meditate upon His Word. Choose--on purpose-- to think on whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them]. (Phil 4:8)

You must take action as opposed to sitting there getting bombarded by the devil. Praise Him--worship Him!!! You must act instead of wallow!

*Oh yeah--make sure you've got your armor on!

Ephesians 6: The Whole Armor of God

10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,[c] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints-- 19and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

Ask, abd it shall be given you; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you: for everyone that asks recieves, and he that seeks finds, and to him that knocks, the door will be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son asked you for a peice of bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall you Father, which is in heaven give good things [Holy Spirit] ti those who ask.

Excellent verse there. I was told that the original Greek has the meaning of: "ask, and continue to ask; keep on and on asking..."

That's encouraging, because often the season of heart-cry is long isn't it? But the promise is He will give.

And yes, praise, even when, maybe especially when, we don't feel up to it; it's a very powerful thing.

Just one more point - your title is great - how to get the joy back, but then you ask how to get the Holy Spirit back.
Don't forget, never forget, that you can't "lose" Him! When we can't "feel" His presence, we need to remember that and not allow the negative feelings to destroy the truth and the hope in us.

God bless, love Sue

You get it back by first understanding that it is not gone. You just need a refreshing and you do that daily by keeping your mind in and on God's word. Keep a journal, that may help. Log all of God's love for you and what He did today to show you His love. Log down how He romanced you today. Write down what soft loving, sweet things He whispered in your ear. Keep track of how many times He kissed you on your cheek when the wind blew. Remember how He made you blush at the sight of a smile from someone that saw your beautiful face today. He is always romancing you. You just have to see Him and know His touch and His heart for you. Oh how He romances you daily. You are the love of His life and He is the lover of your soul. Don't ever forget that. Write it down, it always helps me. That is why and how I stay so in love with Him.

In His love you flourish.

Thanks for the encouraging replies everyone.

The reason I know I'm not spirit filled anymore is because there are times when I have "stabs" of disbelief in Jesus in my heart that I quickly fight off. You all know what it says in the bible, how no one born of God can ever doubt him in their heart or something like that.

Everyone has "stabs of doubt" at times. Frankly, I have been through some very rough times in my life, and at those times, I have had much more than "stabs" of doubt. I don't believe there is any verse in the Bible that says what you mentioned.

The true joy of God is not an emotion. Emotions are very temporary. They can change with the time of day, the state of your digestion, or driving down the highway in traffic. Joy is closely related to faith and hope. You are probably experiencing a time of less emotion. Emotion can be good or bad. But depending on it is not good. Faith goes beyond emotions or doubts. The Holy Spirit does not come and go. He is not an emotion. His presence is not know by emotions. He leads us to truth, convicts of sin, and bears witness of Jesus in our hearts.

You have the Joy of the Lord if you are Born-again, it just needs to be released through faith. Remember, Christ lives in you, Thus his eternal Joy is already there. You are the Love of his life, he Loves you powerfully.

If you need somthing from God badly. Make sure you rejoyce in the Lord when someone else receives it instead of you.

Pray for others to receive it, pray for your enemys to have it, and do it from a true and loving heart sencerly. And when/if at times you don't feel that you have it, praise him ! and be thankfull for his goodness, knowing that he is faithfull regardless of how things may seem to be !, even though you may be suffering, remember he loves you. make sure and pray to be girded for battle by the Holy Spirit ! Take care of your health ! make sure to eat right and war against anything that tryes to put a drain on you. Cry out to God he will refresh you ! when/if you get and anxiety etc.

Also, Joy can be released in obedence. Remember, stay weak so you can be strong in Christ !

I wouldn't mind if you could find that scripture and see what it actually says. I can't recall a scripture like that anywhere.

I agree with the others here. Once you have received the Holy Spirit, you have it. You do not lose it. The Bible says that the gifts and calling of God is without repentance. That means that once God gives you the gifts, He does not change His mind and take them back for any reason.

We have a spiritual nature and a natural mind. Often it is our natural mind that brings the doubts and fears. We will always have that natural mind. The Bible says somewhere else that the flesh wars against the Spirit. This means that your natural mind will do battle against what the Spirit is trying to do in you. You will always sense that there is a battle of faith going on in your all the time.

Faith basically is making a cold blood decision to believe what the Bible says about you, regardless of what your natural mind is telling you. Your natural mind is telling you that Jesus is not really there. The Bible says that Jesus really is there and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him with all their heart. You have to make a decision which you want to believe - your natural mind or the Bible.

The fact that you fight off these thoughts that come from your natural mind is a good indication that you are using your faith to kick those doubts in the guts. You are making a decision to believe in God whatever your mind tells you. This, to me, is an indication that your faith is strong and you are willing to fight for it.

Be encouraged in God and keep believing against all odds.

Let me tell ya those stabs of disbelief are from the enemy, i say this because I to have to deal with sometimes. Not to long ago I came under attack from him and the way he gets at me is through my mind. Now I love the Lord & anyone who knows me knows that. So anyway I not gaining victory in an area & he was hamering on my mind and I was talking to a friend about the coming of the Lord & she had said we need to be watchful & not wordly and all of a sudden this thought came in my ming ( he shouldn't have made it so hard to live in) and when I thought this I felt a stab in my heart. And i knew then how to understand the scripture of bringing thoughts into the obdience of Christ and pulling down strongholds 2 Cor 10v4,5,6. You just keep preservering & don't give up.

The doubt is not indicative of you not being spirit-filled. It is a measuring stick that there is still more time with God that is required on your part. The more time spent with Him, the less doubt you will have. Your disbelief stems from this as well. You have to step up your game. You can't keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect a change. That is insanity in it purest form. You must change what you are doing in order to move forward. Search your heart and take inventory of your relationship with God. See what you are missing and how you can spend more time with God daily.

You can't lose the Holy Spirit. God loves you and wants you to be saved. Salvation is a one time act of believing in Christ in which you are sealed with the Holy Spirit until we are reedemed by Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 1:13 "And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of His glory."

Good Article called "25 reasons why salvation is permanent for Christians" http://www.truthortradition.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=126

The Holy Spirit can be "grieved" as described in the Epistles. This is like a state of spiritual slumber in which there is not much spiritual development or growth.

If you are looking to joy in God more, you could check out some of John Piper's books. They are very good from what I have heard and are based on rejoicing in God and Christ.

God Bless

Those who belong to Jesus have the Holy Spirit in them. It is impossible to be a christian without the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13-14). God's Holy Spirit is His seal upon us that we belong to Jesus. I believe that the Holy Spirit is still working in you. If you don't have the Holy Spirit convicting you, you would not be asking for help from us your fellow christians. Your desire to have the joy of God restored back in your life is an evidence that you are saved. Remember joy is more than a feeling it is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. The more you allow the Spirit of God do its work in you, the more you'll have his joy. Draw near to Jesus. "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time opf need" (Heb. 4:15,16). I agree with the other posts. Don't ever forget that Jesus Christ has died for your sins because He loves you. Call out to Him always. If you don't even have the words to express what's in your heart just say His name "Jesus". See ya.

When my joy leaves me, I start praising God. I make up poems about his goodness and love. I sing sweet songs of praise to him. And them magically, my joy returns. Why? Because his joy is my joy. It works every time. The Holy Spirit will never leave you, but may remain quiet at times for different reasons. For example, if you are seeking yourself, instead of God, The holy Spirit may remain silent until you once again seek God.
