The modern person, especially in the West, thinks of time in a very mechanistic way. We watch the clock, which is in itself a mechanical device without intrinsic meaning. For shorter periods of time we look at the clock rather than the sun. For longer periods, we watch the crops, track our children's growth, or more broadly chart the rise and fall of nations...

Probably by the sun. Their day started when the sun came up and ended when the sun went down. They were not bound by minutes and hours like we are, that didn't start till modern day clocks were invented. They thought of time by like morning, mid day and evening. They set their schedule around that. So yeah they thought of time in a completely different way than we do today. There was no such thing as meet me in 5 minutes. :) They were much freer than we are. Now everything is ruled by time.
