The way he treated women was awful. He had 4 wives and divorced one by whom he had 5 kids when she was having medical treatment in Moscow. The man was brutal in that respect.

Soviet help was a factor, for example a lot of Japanese weopan stocks were picked up by Mao cause of the Soviets.

The mission and self aggrandizement seemed to come first. Millions of people died in slaughters and because of famines and because of the prolonged civil war. That single minded brutal will to power was a definite feature of Mao.
