  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How can one be sure he is one of the elect?

The Holy Spirit works in heart of the elect by the preaching of the word to teach them their sinfulness, the blackness of their souls and their need for Jesus Christ. The elect believe the revealed will of God in the word once they are enable by grace to do so. This grace and mercy of God teaches them to hold fast to the promises of God in Jesus Christ through the
Holy Spirit.

The cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but not to us.

PS: Non-calvinists limited the atonement by claiming Christ's death is limited by the free will of man and only becomes effectual once it is believed. If a condemned prisoner is pardoned by the King the prisoner is immediately pardoned. The pardon does not depend on the apprehension of the condemned. This is too individualistic and misses the point of the Gospel.

Do you have faith in Christ?

Then, you are amongst the elect.

The same way one is "sure he is of the elect" in Arminianism.

By his faith in Christ.

This isn't an issue or dilemma that is unique to Calvinism.

Also, the warrant for putting your faith in Christ is not "are you elect?" but "are you a sinner?" There is no where in the Bible that we are told that we must first "find out if we are elect, so that we may then turn from our sins and put our faith in Christ". But rather, we are commanded to turn from our sins and put our faith in Christ because we are sinners and deserve hell.

So it seems your question is a false dilemma.
