I am glad for you m0rdecai.
Have you heard about the Tabernacle? It had three parts. The outer court, the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. Likewise man (human) has three parts (the Trinity of man, in the image of God) Body, Soul, Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23) which line up to the Tabernacle.
Body=Outer Court
Soul = Holy Place
Spirit = Most Holy Place.
God dwelt in the Most Holy place only. You want god to be number one in your life so ultimately your goal is to dwell in the Most Holy Place 24/7. However, only a High Priest could go into the Most Holy Place, and only once a year, but...
Hebrews 10:20 says this
20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place.
and Hebrews 6:19-20 says this
19 This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. 20 Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.
Basically our soul contains our mind and emotions. When Jesus was on earth his denied his will and gave it up to do the Father's will (Read Gethsemane to see Jesus saying "not my will, but thine be done" so he had his own will that he denied for his entire life). Through his death he tore the veil between the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. In Hebrews 6 it says Jesus has gone into the Most Holy Place for us to Mediate between us and God.
So what says you?
Well Jesus says that we can come through him to the Father (somewhere between John 14-John 17). Therefore, we can through the blood of Christ come into the Most Holy Place as well. This require our denial of our will and to take up God's will (Jesus said to take up our cross and follow him daily [Matthew 16:24]. When you are on the cross, you lose all rights and are dead. No ifs ands or buts.)
There is no other way but this. By the grace of God you must deny yourself. Give up your flesh, and sinful desires (we all have these and all must do the same) and take up our cross and submit in obedience to God every day.
Luke 1:74-75 says that everyday we must serve the Lord without fear (perfecting Love 1 John 4:17), Holiness (2 Corinthians 1) and Righteousness (Romans 4:3).
Read scripture slowly and understand these things. By relying fully on God and not our own human means (Galatians 3:1-4) we can overcome our sins, our flesh, and the Devil & his fallen angels.
This is how you put Christ first in your life. It will bring suffering, it will hurt, there will be many storms. People will laugh at you to your face, and think you crazy, and say you are too radical. I know from experience. To follow God isn't always what seems logical (I got a job and the second day he said I don't need money, but more faith, so I quit and people think me crazy because they don't think I can provide for schooling now, but I know God will provide for me). Even professing Christians will laugh at you and think your going too far. However, that is the price. Jesus said to count the cost of following him. You must follow God even if your family demands you do the opposite. You must suffer many tribulations to enter the Kingdom of heaven (Acts 14:22), and I will say it is a slow process, and will take years, so don't expect immediate results, but like a plant growing little by little day by day so too will you grow. Read the scripture quotations and pray that the Holy Spirit reveal this to you, otherwise it is all babel of man. Read the scripture slowly and try to understand these things and you will find the narrow path.
