An important article on the changing of the Democratic Party into the party of the little guy, the immigrant, the Catholics and Jews. A very positive change for the Democratic Party which was more the unreconstructed party of the KKK before that.

Another big change in the Democratic Party was when Hubert Humphrey pushed LBJ and the Democrats on civil rights. All to the good. All before the silly season which seemed to start with George McGovern (or at least his supporters).

The reason I think it is important was that between Humphrey and the great Al Smith, they made a party worthy of belonging to. Sad that it is a ruinous hideous mess today. I could go into good and bad influences on the Republican Party some other time. My immediate interest is forming new majority parties that are worthy of belonging to.
