We're having turkey at our Church but with just my family, we're having roast beef this year. Some of my favorite dishes around this holiday are:
pumpkin pie + french vanilla ice cream
sweet potato mash [cinnamon and butter added]
mashed potatoes
brussel sprouts with olive oil, salt, and garlic powder
turkey stuffing
corn, peas, carrots on the side

This is what we usually have at Thanksgiving dinner:

Turkey
Mashed potatoes
Stuffing
Green beans
Corn
Cranberry sauce
Dinner rolls
Pumpkin pie

I don't eat the stuffing or corn, and the pumpkin pie is usually saved for later.

My favorite holiday desserts are Libby's pumpkin pie (recipe on the label) and my mother-in-law's gingerbread. My mother made those pies for Thanksgiving and Christmas. She didn't bake pies the rest of the year.

My favorite Christmas cookies are Kifli (Source: McCall's Cooking School: Desserts/Cookies). Gingerbread Men are a must just because they're so cute!

I love sweet potatoes. Today my mother told me that she doesn't care for them --- :astonished:!

Oh, I almost forgot to mention Coconut Pecan Chess Pie.

My gingerbread people are made with molasses! That's the way I like them, but I wish they turned out as lovely as these.

FROSTED CRANBERRY SALAD 1
(Frosty Cranberry Mold)
Cooking for the holidays can be exhausting, but this can be made days ahead and frozen!

1 cup heavy cream, whipped or 1 envelope Topping Mix, whipped
1 (1 lb) can whole cranberry sauce
1 (8 1/2 oz) can crushed pineapple
2 pkgs (3 oz each) raspberry flavor Jell-o
1 (8 oz) pkg cream cheese, room temperature
2 tbsp Miracle Whip Salad Dressing
1 tart apple, peeled and chopped
1/2 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped

Whip cream or make topping mix according to package directions and refrigerate.

Drain cranberry sauce and pineapple; reserve liquids and add enough water to make 2 cups of liquid. Pour into a small saucepan and bring to a boil.

Dissolve Jell-o in the hot liquid. Chill until only partially set.

Beat softened cream cheese and salad dressing together until fluffy.

Gradually beat in the Jell-o. Fold this mixture into the whipped cream. Set aside 1 1/2 cups of this mixture for the frosting.

Add drained cranberry sauce and pineapple, apples, and nuts to the remaining Jell-o mixture. Pour into an 11x7-inch glass dish, or any mold or dish you think would work; refrigerate until the surface sets; about 20 minutes.

Frost with reserved mixture. Chill for several hours or freeze until needed.

Defrost 1 hour before serving.

Turkey for Thanksgiving, but ours is so close to Christmas, that I changed to beef roast and Yorkshire pudding for Christmas.
Sounds really good; actually up here Thanksgiving is at the beginning of October; whereas of course in the US it's at the end of November; so I guess the 'When the turkey?' question is different. :)

Yep and October makes more sense --- maybe even September in some places. All the Thanksgiving cards have autumn scenes on them, but late November is gray and leafless and no pumpkins unless they're faux.
