My mother and I were discussing the current election a bit today. I am a leftie-liberal democrat and she's a conservative fundamentalist republican.

When I asked her who she would have preferred as a candidate rather than McCain she said Guiliani. That threw me a bit as he seemed really far away from con-fun principles, but I could understand it at least a little bit. What really tripped me up though, was when she started ripping on Hillary Clinton. One of her biggest complaints was that Hillary is accepting of misogyny, because she didn't divorce Bill over the whole Lewinsky thing.

At first I argued that she should be looked up to for forgiving her husband (she seemed to think the biblical thing to do would have been to divorce him) but then it struck me --- How can you support someone who cheated on their wife, divorced her and then married the 'other woman' and be venomous towards someone who forgave their adulterous spouse and remained committed to him regardless? Her response was that Guiliani apologized. But what would Hillary have to apologize for in that instance? I'm sure Bill apologized to Hillary and if so there was no need for him to make it public anyway, that's their private family business.

Now, I know she honestly feels this way and i'm not at all implying that all conservatives would agree with this viewpoint. But can anyone logically explain how it is possible to vilify a victim who forgives the one who transgressed against her while simultaneously excusing and approving of one who was the transgressor in a similar situation? Are there any other conservatives around here who think the same way or anyone at all that can makes sense of that? Because for me I just can't understand such a viewpoint.
