Jonah 4:1 (ESV) “But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.”

The book of Jonah is chalked full of irony. The prophet receives a call from God and runs. Just when he thinks he has run far enough away, God is to be found in the storm and a mighty fish. The most wicked city of the day turns to God. Finally, the very thing that any minister of the Gospel longs to see occurs and Jonah gets vexing mad about it. What irony!

You expect Jonah to be thrilled at what just happened. He had been humbled and humiliated, even praying a heart-wrenching prayer. The prophet couldn’t perceive why the thrice-holy God of Israel would find pleasure in sparing judgment on a wicked city. Yet, Jonah, like most of us, had plenty of good teaching about God in his head, but those amazing facts never found a place in his heart. As long as God acted according to Jonah’s understanding, life was grand and okay!

Theology affects every facet and area of your life. You may think too little of God or improperly about Him. What knowledge you accumulate about God will direct your life. Theology will, at the most practical level, impact how you serve God, treat others, share your faith, worship, love your family, etc.

“This is the heart of the matter for us today. Because we think that theology is irrelevant, we have been ‘conformed’ to the world's way of thinking rather than being ‘transformed by the renewing of our minds’ (Rom 12:2). Only if we resist the emphasis on personal experience, self- indulgence, and the anti-intellectualism of our day, and begin to mine the rich resources of our Christian faith and heritage, then will we ‘no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming’ (Eph. 4:14).”
