    She didn't compare the events.

"Certain dates echo throughout history, including dates that instantly remind all who have lived through them -- where they were and what they were doing when our democracy came under assault. Dates that occupy not only a place on our calendars, but a place in our collective memory. December 7th, 1941. September 11th, 2001. And January 6th, 2021."

Nothing to get worked up about. It's a comment perfectly worthy of Kamala Harris's intellect.

That's useful -- barring death or imprisonment, Donald will run again in 2024, and if the establishment doesn't come through and give him the presidency, it's reassuring to know that the Capitol Police will be ready to fend off Round 2.

...which is why I argued that the bigger threat to democracy is the effort by a large number of Republicans to circumvent the outcome of the election and to establish procedures that would make such an effort more feasible in the future.

Much of our government only functions as well as it does because of the people within it acting in good faith and believing in the institutions themselves. There are very few safeguards in place to protect against folks acting in bad faith, especially when more than a few of them act together.

What's it say about folks' intellect when they mischaracterize her speech and respond to something she didn't say?

Hmm. Reading that, I think she is comparing the events: all seminal moments when our democracy was attacked.

Re 1/6. I think its a sign that theres a growing set of fear motivated citizens who find violence an appropriate prescription to remedy the shock of the coming demographic change.

It's probably not that sophisticated or intricate.

The VP was merely picking up on--and repeating in her own way--the current campaign theme of her political party, which wants everyone to know that a few people who broke windows and scattered paper around in the Capitol were the most threatening terrorists in all human history (at least since Attila the Hun).

She simply isn't as smooth or skilled at presenting the claim as are other people in her party.

If, to make your point, you have to ignore the genuine and quite shocking violence that occurred, youre clearly hiding something from yourself.

She literally says that dates that occupy our calendars and collective memory are attack on Pearl Harbor ushering in our moment to enter WWII and the attack on the Twin Towers providing for 3000+ deaths in American soil from a terrorist attack. Jan 6 (the day democracy almost dued) should occupy out calendars like those world changing events?

That's a comparison whether or not she actually said the word "compares" or "comparison".

    It's absolutely ridiculous.

Jan 6 (the day democracy almost died), was quite shocking. But it was one day that ended with the only death being one of the rioters and a bunch of people taking selfies and messing up desks. No one burned anything down. The capitol wasn't destroyed. In the large scheme of things it wasn't even close to a day that belongs on our calendars to be considered every year. We still had the election process, Biden was still inaugurated, Congressmen still were placed in their seats and everything marches on.

A disorganized mob did stupid things and they all should be prosecuted. And it appears that is happening. But it's no worse than what happened through out last year at the other riots around the country. And they don't belong in our calendar either.

If 1/6 was just an aberrant spasm, then I'd agree.

But I think it was really an expression of deeper resentments, and the impulse will return over and over again. Crucially, it was a signal that many people are ready to move on from rule of law means of selecting government in favor of force if sufficiently disappointed.

Not to mention a sitting US president gleefully watching as it unfolds. And a truly vast number of Americans who live in some alternate reality where Trump should be the rightful president.

A group of people who were angry that their chosen candidate didn’t win outright were going to try (ineffectively, it turned out) to use violence to get the political end that they (as a group) desired.

That is the very definition of “terrorism”.

Yes what do her actual words matter to Trumpers. Twist them to the point where the claim becomes a blatant lie. It makes no difference, she said something bad about The Leader.

I agree it may have been over the top by categorizing these events in the same bucket.

She was more on point with this:

"What the extremists who roamed these halls targeted was not only the lives of elected leaders. What they sought to degrade and destroy was not only a building, hallowed as it is. What they were assaulting were the institutions, the values, the ideals that generations of Americans have marched, picketed, and shed blood to establish and defend.

On January 6th, we all saw what our nation would look like if the forces who seek to dismantle our democracy are successful. The lawlessness, the violence, the chaos.

What was at stake then, and now, is the right to have our future decided the way the Constitution prescribes it: by we, the people -- all the people.

We cannot let our future be decided by those bent on silencing our voices, overturning our votes, and peddling lies and misinformation; by some radical faction that may be newly resurgent but whose roots run old and deep."

The peddling of lies and misinformation (often reflected in this forum) is the greatest threat to our democracy.

It does seem a bit of an exaggeration when we remember that 1/6 failed to accomplish its mission.

But it did change the country, insofar as it made us all aware how far the deluded will go in the name of The Big Lie.
