Those who wanted to defeat Brexit always clamed the Referendum vote was close.
Well, it was easily the closest referendum result in UK history.
However when someone asked a politician, before the referendim, what was the margin needed to win, he said "One vote." The actual margin was about 1.4 million, .
Actually, it was 1.27 million. A margin of 3.8%.
the biggest margin in our history.
That's not even remotely true. Either in number of votes or voting margin:
In the original 1975 referendum on whether to stay in the EU or not,
67.2% of voters said yes, a margin of
8.9 million votes.
In the 1931 election - when the total electorate was just 16.5 million compared to 46.5 million for the Brexit vote - the Conservative party won by just over
5 million votes, with a margin of
24.4%.
In the 1945 election, when the total electorate was 29.12 million, the Labour party won by 3.25 million votes with an 11.5% margin of the popular vote
In the 2001 election, Labour won by 2.37 million votes
In the 2015 election, the Conservatives won by 2.01 million votes
In the 2010 election, the Conservatives won by 2.09 million votes
In 1959, the Conservatives won the vote by 1.59 million votes
and so on and so on and so on....
But never let the truth get in the way of a good story, right?
