When I was a kid (a hundred years ago), Halloween was fun. Most costumes were store-bought, made from a cheapie rayon fabric that tied in the back and included a flimsy plastic mask with holes for the eyes and an elastic band to keep it on the head. We ran from house to house, collected far too many tooth-rotting treats, and then ate candy for weeks afterwards.

These days, Halloween is more of an adult holiday. Kids can't go "Trick or Treating" because sickos put razorblades or LSD in the goodies. Costumes are gorey, gross, or disgusting, and the emphasis is on "haunted houses."
Only the brave children with an adult escort dare go from house to house any more.

As a "Kid Holiday," I have no problem with Halloween. But now that it has degenerated into a celebration of the macabre, I don't even want to buy candy any more.

Thoughts?

Peace,
~VOW

More than just being a celebration of the macbre, around here it is a celebration of violence and death. Halloween decorations used to be jackolanterns and paper bats. Now it's typical to see a yard decked out as a cemetery, complete with partly rotten corpses, bodies with axes sticking out of their heads, giant pools of blood, scattered body parts, etc. It's gotten to be really sick! :p

Plus, costumes have gotten sick, too. The newspaper just reported that the biggest selling costume this year is an Osama bin Laden mask with bullet holes through the head--and not just for adults, but in children's sizes, too! The second biggest seller around here is Freddie Kruger and Silence of the Lambs masks.

Yuck!!

I agree about the costumes....some of them are just getting so bad...definitely sending the wrong message to kids.

I remember the old costumes...with those masks that got so hot and stuffy (as I can eat 50 eggs put it). My favorite was being Big Bird...because it was only half a mask! hehe My mom used to always make my sister and I wear our coats under the costumes...which made them look dumb.

I do have to say, my favorite part of Halloween are the little kids who come to the door dressed as a princess or baseball player and get all shy when they say "Trick or Treat!" hehe

I do not like all the other stuff that comes with it...the thought of haunted houses that make you pay $20 to get in, the tricks on Oct. 30th and 31st...

We live in a small town, and the city council mandated a while back that all trick or treating be done between 4pm and dusk. Just safer for the kids out walking around the town. Last year was the first year we got to take our daughters out for it (the year before my wife had just delivered our younger daughter on Oct. 30). It was a lot of fun. It was like a social event, and every house had good candy (not that generic stuff or bags of walnuts like I used to find in my bag.....).

I agree that some have taken it to a sick new level, but for now, I'll be happy to tote my daughter around in whatever we pick out for her to be and let her fill a sack with candy that mom and I will end up eating most of......hee hee hee.

Halloween has always been satanic and demonic.

Stay at home, say a prayer for protection, and don't go out until morning the next day. Also, don't partake by giving out candy-post a small notice on your door saying that Halloween is against your beliefs and stating why. :)

Hi VOW :)
I take my daughter to a Halloween carnival near my house every year, she adores it since she gets to dress up, play games, and after I take her around trick or treating with some of her cousins. I agree though, it is definitely a night to be extra cautious.

Also every year she asks me to dress up with her. This year she wants me to be Patrick the Starfish from Sponge Bob :)

any volunteers to take my place?;)

Amie~

If you hear a loud THUD against your door on Halloween...that would be a local teenage boy throwing a pumpkin at your door and running off with the note

Keep the porch lights off people...its hard to read in the dark;)

We live on a VERY busy street, and the kids are practically BUSSED in. Some years, it doesn't matter how much candy we buy, there's never enough. I try to get the stuff WE like, in case there are any leftovers...HA, leftovers!

My favorite time is right at twilight, when the babies are brought around. The poor tots are so terrified, they won't even hold open the bag to get goodies! Some of the costumes are so clever, too.

One year, we took our kids to the Mall. It was like one LONG line of people, making a complete circle through the whole Mall. It was nice: no freezing weather, no dark streets to cross, and the stores wouldn't DARE give out hazardous treats. I liked it because I could see how all the other kids dressed up. One kid, I remember, was a Thanksgiving turkey dinner. He had his head stuck through a box, and the top of the box was decorated with a paper table cloth and paper plates and napkins and plastic tableware was glued down to look like a table set for dinner. He had a big colorful turkey tail stuck behind his head, and the whatever-it's-called hanging on his nose. I wanted to follow the kid around and study his costume!

What used to fry my bacon was when the kids were at preschool, and the school would have a Halloween party with a costume contest. Some kids were wearing big, decked out fancy numbers costing a couple hundred bucks from a catalogue. What's the fun in that? The homemade ones are the ones that are the most fun. One year, I dressed my daughter up as a tube of toothpaste. She looked GREAT!

Lambslove, your town sounds like it desperately needs help. Rotting corpses and heads with axes in them is a picture that actually is making me ill, sitting here thinking about it. How terrible it is that a holiday which used to be just some kiddie fun has turned into such a ghastly, revolting "party"!

Peace,
~VOW

Amieee :) Hallo lieverd. I'd go with Kristyn without hessitation.

In (only the northern part where I'm from) of Holland we celebrate St. Maarten; which is an awfull lot like trick or treating. You go from door to door singing songs, collecting candy. There's no ghost-theme or dressing up, but you make your own decorated "lampion".

Sigh. That doesn't work around here. I keep my porch light off, and people come anyway, then I have to explain that I don't do trick or treat, then I look like a stick-in-the-mud.

Even if I sit in the house with all the lights out, some parent will have their kid knock on my door anyway, like I owe them candy because I live in the neighborhood.

The only way to avoid it is to not be home at all.
