Faith can be understood as trust.

That one is trusting in God, when you are suddenly fired from your job, or a mob ransacks your home, or illness unexpectedly strikes and one has no cash, friends, family or other forms of help and has to rely on God to meet ones needs.

Then you are growing in faith.

Why did Jesus say the faith of the Centurion was great in mathew chapter 8? What did the centurion say?

A little research would show that Jesus perceived the Roman had faith. The Jews following Jesus had the assistance of the prophets of the law that led them to spiritual blindness and this Roman Centurion came without any such instruction and he just willingly believed and Jesus marveled that he had such great faith comparing to the Jews were full of unbelief. Jesus was simply pointing that out to them.

Did Jesus say he had great faith because he trusted in the greater authority of Jesus compared to which his authority was unworthy as the people in heaven said in Revelation 5:4 ("no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it")? Was the comparison important to Jesus' response?

Jews were full of unbelief
Was the "full of unbelief" because of God's word according to John 12:39,40 prophecied by Isaiah 800 years before?

Because he trusted in Jesus and in his authority to deal with the situation.

No he knew that he had no authority over illness.
Only over soldiers in his command.

Did he say he was unworthy for the Lord to come home because his authority was nothing compared to His authority?
