Sen. Charles E. Grassley (Iowa) blocked two of President Trump’s nominees Thursday in a rare move by a Republican senator to demand accountability from the president over his recent firings of several federal watchdogs.

Grassley, a longtime advocate for inspectors general, announced Thursday afternoon that he is blocking the nominations of Christopher Miller to head the National Counterterrorism Center and Marshall Billingslea to be the State Department’s undersecretary for arms control and international security.

Interesting to see how this goes... and Donald's reaction to being defied.

Thoughts?

This ain't the guy to stand up to Trump! All he wants is a reason! IMO any reason will do. He is a hack.
Senator Grassley has been around for a long, long time and he has stood up to Reps. and Dems. alike. I haven't always agreed with him but he's an honest guy and he's a fighter.

Hopefully Grassley and the other Senators realized how problematic it can be if we take away all of the oversight mechanisms of the Presidency.
Heck, I'll even take him realizing how problematic it will be to get people to vote for him if he continues to support Donald. At this point I'm not going to get picky about him also caring about the country.

Grassley has been the self appointed champion of Inspector Generals for a long time. But I agree that this action is mostly pointless. He's just holding up two sub cabinet positions with the term ending in 6 months and Trump in no way guarenteed to win reelection. There is no real impact here, especially given the President's love of acting appointments.

Sen. Grassley isn't up for reelection in 2020.

How about after 2020? In other words, I'm not sure I see the relevance.
Do you think his supporters will remember this next time they vote in 2022? Grassley was elected for his 7th term in 2016 with over 60% of the vote. He is now 86 yrs. old. He has an A rating with the NRA, he's pro-life, against any estate tax, against the ACH...He's so conservative it's a wonder he hasn't physically turned red. Grassley doesn't need Trump to get Republican votes, neither does he need to distance himself to get Republican votes even if it was this year.

Depending on how this goes down, campaign ads with support for Donald might live on past his presidency.

Grassley was elected for his 7th term in 2016 with over 60% of the vote. He is now 86 yrs. old.

Hmm, in that case it might not matter what happens given how actuarial tables work.

Have you forgotten the startling case of redder than red Jeff Session already?
