In order for jobs to be "created" private business needs to have money to invest towards employees and the supplies necessary to run their business. When business succeeds then they hire more workers. If more and more is STOLEN/UMMMM... TAKEN.. UMMM TAXED. then they are not able to hire as many workers.

Big government has worked NO WHERE SUCCESSFULLY ON EARTH..

First of all, as to whether or not government can create jobs, tell that to the millions of police officers, fire fighters, teachers, etc. who are employed by governments everywhere.

Second, your point is disproven by reality. See, currently, corporate taxes are at an all time low. By your logic, that should translate to more jobs. But it hasn't. In fact, a look at the actual facts proves the exact opposite.

So, obviously, that's not the reason the private sector hasn't created jobs lately.

Nice slogan, but can you back it up? First, define your terms: what makes a government big? If you listen to the right wing, a small government would still have the ability to interfere with and make decisions on behalf of every single pregnant woman in the US, as well as making decisions about who every individual should be allowed to marry. Sounds like many a totalitarian or dictatorial regime, the likes of which have come and gone many times over the centuries. And yet, these are the people who claim to want small government.

And if you look at the left wing, when they call for bigger government, what do they mean? Social programs, safety net stuff like welfare and unemployment, social security and medicare. You know, stuff that helps people. The very ones the government is supposed to be by, for and of.

As to the accuracy of your statement, well, the US government certainly can be called big, at least since the Civil War or so, and it's survived up to now, and will in all likelihood continue to the forseeable future. Can you compare that to similarly big governments that have failed, or contrast it with smaller government that have survived longer?

-- A2SG, let's see how well your slogan holds up to reality, shall we?

The only Jobs the Government can technically create is Government Jobs.
Because they have no say (or should have no say) in private companies.

Because they should be separate from the government (if we really want a free competition market.)
I personally would support the government investing in companies that showed potential but that would ruin
"the free competition market". As in lets say a group potentially found the cure for Cancer or AIDs.
I wouldn't have issue that being funded by tax payer money but would monopolize ended in high costs of the product.
In the end it needs to be product against product for the cheapest price with their own researchers.

Meaning the more jobs the Government Creates is the more we tax payers pay.

Actually, the government has a lot of $s and hires a lot of people.

How they get those dollars, what they hire people to do, and what the alternatives might be, is another story.

NPR had a story mentioning that for every $1 spent on lobbying, companies got ~$220 in tax breaks. Scary stuff.

The more government takes control of the economy the more a business will pay to influence government to favor it. Politicians know this and love it.

Then it seems time to support OWS's demand of Wall Street out of politics. I knew you'd come into the light from the darkness!

It would actually be a real problem if the Government would get involved in industries that are now private and start turning a massive profit.

That the government doesnÂ’t do this is not a strike against it.

Of course the government creates jobs. If a school is built, someone has to build them and jobs are created. Fill the new school with teachers, more jobs are created. Re-build our old infrastuctre, jobs are created.

Bastiat had a lot to say about government spending and what many people fail to consider is that the government must FIRST remove wealth from the economy and removing that wealth has many negative aspects. Sure people 'see' government spending and think it is good but the spending is only as wise as the spender and people are down right foolish when they are spending other peoples money (which is what the government does) and far wiser when they are spending their own money (which is what happens in the free market). How many jobs does the government kill by removing money from the private sector? Riddle me that my statist friends.

    How do you figure?

Taxes are spent by the government to pay teachers, fire fighters, etc., how is that money not back in the economy? And how are corporate profits, amassing wealth in private bank accounts instead of being used to create jobs, in the economy, exactly?

Really? So corporate jets are wise investments, but paying teachers, police officers, fire fighters, etc. aren't? Single individuals owning multi-million dollar homes (plural) is a wise use of money, but governments paying for road construction to be used by everyone isn't?

Care to explain the logic there?

None. It creates jobs, in fact, by hiring millions of people, like teachers, police officers, fire fighters, etc.

-- A2SG, unless, of course, you think a nation that's ignorant, constantly being robbed and on fire is better than what we have now.....

It's actually only the government that creates jobs during the times when economic downturn comes around and the private sector doesn't. By looking away from efficiency and profit, the government creates jobs that offset the negative feedback loop inherent in recessions and depressions, putting money in the pockets of individuals who would otherwise be out of work, or scrambling for a minimum wage job incommensurate with their skill level. Even outside of economic downturn the government can create permanent jobs programs (paying an appropriate wage that's often found less and less in the private market) that slowly build up to aggregate demand, which allows the economy to function better overall.

Goverment is what caused the economic downturn and wall street are the ones that collect all the money people lose during the economic downturns.
