Column: Twice-impeached Trump, GOP bemoan ‘cancel culture.’ If they’re canceled, why are they still so noisy?

I hear the GOP leadership and news outlets whining a lot right now about the evils of 'cancel culture' because apparently they don't like being held accountable for their malicious words and their immoral actions. Apparently they want to be able to consistently and knowingly lie to the public and incite violence without suffering any public consequences.

Trump decries 'cancel culture,' but he has participated in it

Besides the fact that such whining is *ridiculously* hypocritical, the fact of the matter is that Trump and the GOP leadership have been systematically and maliciously engaging in outright lying to the public about wide spread voter fraud, and inciting violence with such lies, and using Facebook and Twitter to do it. Trump and the GOP leadership have lied for months about voting machine companies conspiring with foreign governments to deprive Trump of his "landslide victory". They engaged themselves in a malicious and systematic undermining of our democracy, resulting in *mob violence*. Now however they don't seem to like the public fallout of their immoral actions.

Evidently Fox news and the GOP leadership wish to avoid the inevitable fallout of their actions. They whine about Trump being banned from various social media outlets, despite the fact that he's been blatantly violating their rules for *years*, spreading absurd conspiracy theories and blatantly trying to use such platforms to incite violence and overthrow our Republic.

Please! Trump and his co-conspirators in the House and Senate are getting *exactly* what they deserve. They aren't being 'cancelled', they're simply experiencing the inevitable public fallout for inciting violence, lying repeatedly to the public, and breaking the rules of various public platforms. The proprietors of online platforms have every right, and they have a public duty to moderate the content of their platforms.

CF has posted "rules" too, and if those rules are violated, there are in fact "consequences". That's not "cancel culture", that's just life.

The GOP's new "cancel culture victim" routine is both hypocritical and pathetic IMO.

The problem I have with "cancel culture" is that seems to be rarely about holding people accountable as much as it is about humiliating people for behaviours and decisions that they made years, even decades ago, that does not in any way reflect the growth and maturity that has made them what they are today. People need to be allowed to deal with their own demons and not be dragged through the mud for them, especially if no laws were broken.

There is no way to justify cancel culture, we are a nation of laws and free speech. If someone breaks the law they need to be changed and prosecuted, but that just is not good enough for the cancel culture crowd, they want to punish anyone who has an opinion that is different from what they believe. We need to return to the values that built this nation and free speech is a very important one of those values. The USA does not need to become China where people are punished for having or voicing thoughts that are not in agreement with the party of power.

Cancel culture is really cancel anything not far left leaning. And when you find yourself not quite far enough to the left they will cancel you too. Cancel culture is a non American approach and avoids the constitution which is something you will find more and more prevalent in the coming years, till we are actually communists going into a New World Order. Cancel culture is one more form of hatred fanning the flame of destruction of a country as we once knew it. It's a form of dictatorship flexing it's muscles straining to completely/ finally be unleashed from it's restraints.

This country is in huge trouble, I said it before, with or without Trump and now regardless of pretty even comfy feeling inauguration shots. Some of you are completely consumed by hatred, I've watched it grow. You have absolutely no idea what is really happening, you just hate so much that more hate looks good to you. You've gotten your way, your people are in office and you still won't rest but will go to your graves consumed by hatred. But you need to be careful, one day you may not fit the mold of the perfect society like Jews did not in Nazi Germany's lynch mob dictatorship.. That movement started off so simple, so inviting and it led to their utter destruction.

Frankly, calling the imposition of a dictatorship by a term like "cancel culture" seems rather mild. Generous, almost.

In Trump's case, it's directly related to *recent* activity, and activity that involves inciting violence that resulted in *murder*. His Twitter ban is directly related to the fact that he was using their platform to call his mob to DC, to lie to them, to encourage them (and pressure Mike Pence) to break the law. What Twitter did was simply the inevitable outcome from *misusing* their platform for nefarious purposes. They aren't required to be complicit in his crimes.

Throw them out of office. That's the best way to hold them accountable IMO. They are already being held accountable for their dishonesty and their seditious behavior. In four short years they've lost the Presidency, the House and the Senate, and they remain deeply divided as a party.

In Trump's case he's earned himself a place in history as the only President to be impeached twice, and I hope the Senate finds him guilty and he's not allowed to ever hold public office again. He utterly disgraced himself and his party. The world doesn't need another petty wannabe dictator.

That's another one of those many GOP lies. Trump has himself engaged in such behavior.

If that were true, I wouldn't still be allowed to post on Facebook. I'm pretty moderate actually. I've voted for Republican's before, but I'll probably never vote for another Republican ever again at the rate they're going. IMO the GOP has de-evolved into a cult of personality rather than a party of ideas.

    Blah, blah, conspiracy theory blah.....

Wow. Talk about being completely detached from reality. On January 6th of this year, the majority of the Republican leadership in DC tried to overthrow the duly elected government in a failed coop attempt, and yet they play the role of victim. Please! I'm sick and tired of all the conspiracy theory nonsense and all the GOP hypocrisy.

Perhaps so, but if that's the case it's due to a pandemic and it's economic fallout, not because of Twitter finally deciding to ban a narcissistic pathological liar who happened to become President and who publicly incited violence on their platform.

That's more misinformation. I don't hate anyone, but I have no respect left for a man who lied to me over 20,000 times in four years and who tried to overthrow my Republic.

More lies. FYI, you're a horrible mind reader by the way.

Ya, me and the majority of American voters. That's what happens in a democracy. Sometimes my candidates lose too, but I don't commit treason when that happens.

This is exactly the kind of GOP disinformation and hate that makes me feel sorry for folks like you. You drank the poison cool-aid that Trump and Foxnews handed you.

Those were the guys that showed up in DC a few weeks ago, complete with Auschwitz slogans on their T-shirts, and waving confederate flags. I suggest you look at the images of those who tried to storm the Capitol if you're worried about that. You certainly wont see me in any of those images, but you'll find Trump supporters galore.

There is a reason why people decry cancel culture and chant MAGA at the same time. There was a time when a person of privilege could do and say whatever they wanted. The Tulsa massacre and the murder of Emmitt Till were the extremes of this freedom they had. But the Civil Rights Movement, women's liberation, LGBTQ rights movement, etc., they changed the game. You can no longer say and do whatever you want without accountability, and they hate that. That's why they loved Trump, he seemed to get away with the things they could not. And it wasn't until the terrorist attack on the Capitol building that the good luck ran out for Trump. So now all that happens is incessant whining about things being unfair. No, it's not unfair, no one has is required to sit in your presence if you're going to be rude, mean, intolerant and a overall jerk. Some people want to hate openly without being called out, hence the complaints about cancel culture.

And because of the earthquake that destroyed New York City, we must take exceptional action, mustn't we?

Let's leave the hyperbole aside long enough to address the issue here. The question is about the "cancel culture."

And the first thing to keep in mind when addressing the issue is the fact that the cancel culture has been in operation for some time now. It is not the result of the events of January 6, 2021 or even of the November election.

And it is not even as new as 2020 or 2019 or 2018, for we have already witnessed, in other countries, the operations of totalitarian regimes with their suppression of the rights of any who would dare to disagree with the dictates of the government. Why would we look favorably upon any attempt to impose that in our own country?

I would agree with you that there is some amount of "danger" as it relates to free speech when a *government* engages in such behavior as we see in China, but the banning of Trump by Twitter and Facebook is simply a natural result of Trump breaking their posted rules for years. It's not a nefarious process as the GOP is trying to suggest, it's called "accountability".

It's one step in a process, Michael. And we have the record of history to show how getting away with one previously unthinkable act makes the next one easier until there is no more freedom.

Review the events in the history of Germany during the 1930s if you doubt this. Even after Jews were prohibited from holding jobs and living in houses with heat, many thought that worse things (like deportations and genocide) were beyond contemplating since, after all, Germany was a civilized country, right?

That's kinda laughable in the sense that people get banned by Twitter and Facebook all the time for various reasons, and nobody complains about it, but when it happens to Trump, somehow you think it's wrong. I don't buy it. Every internet chat forum has rules, just like this one. If someone keeps violating those rules, eventually they get banned. If you took away the right of companies to moderate their content, that *too* would be an impingement on their freedom. Where does one draw the line?

I don't see how that's even a valid comparison. If anything it's been *Trump* who's been bashing on the media and trying to undermine their credibility, along with every other area of our democracy, including voting. The GOP just tried to silence *millions* of American votes because they didn't like the outcome of the election.

It's not the *government* that banned Trump from Twitter, it was Twitter banning an individual who happened to be quite powerful politically. It would be like someone silencing Hitler's hate speech.

You seem to have this problems standing on it's head IMO. It's Trump and his violent mob that tried to overthrow our democracy, not Twitter or Facebook. If anything they were simply responding to incitement of violence, and the rampant violation of their posted rules. It's hardly as nefarious as you make it out to be. It happens all the time in cyberspace to lots of people for lots of reasons. So what if it happens to be Trump this time? Again, it would be akin to Facebook or Twitter refusing to allow their forum to be used to incite violence, and banning Hitler from their website. Trump hasn't acted in a "civilized" manner. He's been spreading division and hatred and lies for *years*.

Well then, let me explain why they and I would say it's wrong--and phony.

While the President of the United States is banned by these people for what they claim implies something or other, all sorts of terrorists, Iranian revolutionaries, black supremacists, and so on continue very openly to preach hate and threaten violence and they are not similarly banned.

If you think you can explain how this one-sided policy represents anything but bias, go ahead.

    Ok. :)

So assuming all of that is true, are you advocating taking away Twitter's right to moderate their forums, and advocating that all violent individuals should have the right to use Twitter any way they see fit, regardless of how Twitter feels about it?

I don't have to. Bias isn't unusual actually. I'm not suggesting any organization is 100 percent compliant with even their own policies, particularly a gigantic organization like Twitter or Facebook. They're always having to remove content *after* they find it. It's not like they didn't warn Trump, and it's not like Trump is "special" just because he's the President. I'd dismayed at how *long* it took Twitter and Facebook to finally ban Trump and everyone else that violates their policies.

Do you really think that Foxnews or MSNBC isn't "biased"? When was "bias" a rational reason to take away the rights of any company to conduct business as they see fit? If that were the case, Foxnews wouldn't even exist.

No! If I had meant that, I would have included it in my post.

I was clear in saying that Twitter (and others) are biased and explained why that is correct to say.
