i have a bunch of friends that all play guitars and they taught themselves. they have shown me what they can do, and i think its sooooo awesome. so i decided, im gonna learn guitar. now i dont know if ill teach myself like my friends did or ill take lessons. i know its gonna take a lot of practice, but i know i can do it. so i was looking around at different guitars.

i have heard mixed reviews about the squires. my local guitar center sells the squire strat pack for $270 that comes with an amp and a squire affinity. its a nice looking guitar and the amp is adequate. but i heard that once i can play the guitar a bit, i will realize that that guitar isnt very good at all.

so my budget is more or less $400, amp and guitar.

i saw a nice refurbished les paul for $350 here.
its a low end les paul but its still better than any squire. and ill just find a nice $100 amp and ill be good.

so what do you suggest for a newb like me with a budget like mine? thanks in advance

Hmm... I'd suggest starting with an acoustic. Acoustics tend to emphisize technique, which is important. Those techniques can be carried over to an electric later.

In general, if you just want to play an electric guitar, get and electric guitar. If you REALLY want to play an electric guitar, start off with an acoustic, your skills will be far better. When you switch to an electric.

yea... an acoustic also strengthens you fingers too.. so when you do switch.. its easier to control the strings...

starting with an acoustic would be pretty good, I'm starting out on a squier, it's all I could afford, but if you can afford better, go for it, squier's not all that great, even for learning, you get so much buzzing in your amps it's annoying. Anywho, just my 2 cents worth. God Bless-

i got myself a squire and i hear the buzz and i can definately stand it. not a problem at all for me. its sooo much fun learning the tunes to my favorite songs and playing them.

i got the squire affinity strat that came in a pack with an amp and some other stuff. maybe i should have learned on acoustic, maybe not. but all i want to do is play my favorite songs, not become a professional musician.

this is the best $300 i have ever spent

Just start simple. Take your time... that's the best advice I can give you. I taught myself and spent about 8 hours every day on it.... Go to Christianguitar.ord and get a chord chart and start with that.....

For someone that has started on the squire, I would immediately change the strings and make sure the neck is adjusted correctly before you buy it. My squire's neck needs some work because the E and A strings both buzz on the lower fret's. It's not real noticeable through the amp, but for someone like me it a peeve.

Also another great site to go for advice and tutorials is www.ibreathemusic.com

Good luck..
