The great heresy of our time is probably proto-gnosticism. It's main proponents are the new atheists who claim that the God of the Old Testament is a despotic, egomaniacal brute.

Worshipping God is not something mandated, it is simply the universe unfolding in truth. What alternative is there when faced with God? Worship is simply the recognition of who God is. It is right response to reality. God does not mandate or demand worship, it is simply the only possible orientation we can have towards Him as our sustainer.

I claim that God is the ultimate exemplar and source of humility. God is , of course, the greatest of all beings. He is the primordial one, and the sustainer of all things. At the same time, it was always His intention to become embodied within thecreation He created in order to become our salvation and redemption. He intended , from the beginning, to become our sacrifice. He had His sights set on Bethlehem before the dawn of time.

If God is the greatest being, it follows that God is the ultimate gift. What does God do with this gift? He parcels it out across all heaven and earth so that in him we live and move and have our being. The greatest act of humiltiy is the gift of the self. There is nothing more intimate, and for us, it supresses ego entirely.

The inheritors of the gnostic lie haven't grasped this. Our God is the ultimate and supreme one, yet chooses to inhabit our frail and sinful bodies. Our God bore our shame and punishment. Despite His power and majesty He still confers the gift of autonomy. He beckons and woos and would have us fall in love.
