So,almost three years ago I heard the voice of God saying to me that ive been called to study the mind. Which is psychology. And im not interested in counseling people. Ive been through anxiety and depression, and God is slowing healing me,and I feel peace and joy. I feel free. But its not really my thing. Not that im knocking psychology, but I dont want to sit down in a office, and listen to peoples problems. I want to help people through the things ive been through, but more in like pastoral way or a family member in Christ friend type of way. I want to go into Business, like marketing,or start an online business and reach people that way. I dont want to be a Psychologist. I know I have gifts and talents, but its just not my thing. Im kinda conflicted about this, part of me wants to do this but part of me doesnt. Any advice? Thanks.

I would say to listen to your heart, always listen to your heart, and just really think about what you want to do.

Are sure it was GOD calling you? how did you test the spirit?

    1 John 4
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. ...

Isn't marketing studying the mind and how to use that knowledge? I believe that God's will is less like a tiny target that we have to hit, and more like a big road where we can choose where we walk on it, using our common sense. There may be a number of choices, all of which are moral, sensible, and would let you serve God- all on the road. If you are sure that God spoke, and there is a way to study the mind that fits much better with your preference, then go for it.

Since you are conflicted, you may have misinterpreted the message.

What are some other meanings you can consider based on what you heard?

The Lord be very capable of speaking to a believer/and or letting him or her
know a thing since they too have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them.

Follow the Bible on this and test the spirit IE the pastor.

    Isaiah 8:20
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

What Jesus said about the law
    John 14:15
If ye love me, keep my commandments.

    Bible definition of testimony
    Revelation 19:10
And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Hope this helps to test the spirit/pastor.

Are you sure you are hearing the voice of God? Nine out of every ten impressions we receive come from the world, the flesh or the devil, so we have to be careful about what we receive. If you have the slightest doubt, this could be the Holy Spirit saying to you, "Be careful! Don't rush in. Wait patiently for the Lord to lead you"

Remember that Satan is the master impressionist. He can counterfeit the voice of God to you and deceive you into going into ventures that will end up in disappointment and disillusionment, and then induce you to blame God that He was unfaithful to you in telling you to do something, go somewhere, and it all turning to custard.

Is the voice telling you to do something that is not in your heart, consistent with God's written word? Doesn't God say that if we trust Him He will give us the desires of our hearts? If psychology is not the desire of your heart, which, by what you are saying, it isn't, then maybe you should doubt the origin of the voice, and wait further on God in prayer and His Word until you know from Him.

It sounds to me that it is the pastor's desire for you and not God's. I would be very cautious about that. The Word says that in the mouths of two or three witnesses let every word be established. Your heart's desire is one strong witness, and it that does not witness to what the pastor has said, then there has to be an amber light, holding you back from obeying the voice of the pastor until you get your three witnesses in line. Circumstances and opportunities are other witnesses. If you follow your heart's desire (and not the pastor's), and doors open to you for you to do what you really want to do for your vocation, then that is the second witness. You then might have close trusted Christian friends who may also witness, supporting your heart and the circumstances. Those three witnesses will then show you that the pastor's words were not the voice of God to you at all!

Not all psychology is clinical/therapy. There are a lot of applications for the use of psychology, including business ones. It might be worth while looking at some of the potential careers you can have in various psychological fields.

That is the sinner's heart. The truly converted Christian has a new heart to follow Christ as his or her greatest desire. That verse does not apply to this case.

I wanted to study psychology when I got my chance to do university study, but it didn't work out for me, even though I did well in my introductory papers, but I had a change of direction and got my degree in English Literature and a teaching diploma instead and had a 19 year career in teaching. I also wanted a Divinity degree and the Lord made me wait until I was 66 years old before I did one. The blessing of the English degree (I got to M.A. level), was that the Lord was able to use those skills to give me a ministry in writing Christian ministry books. We can make our plans, but the Lord guides our steps. But it is important that when we make our plans, we don't prioritize them over the leading of the Lord, and when His leading alters our plans, we go with the Lord and revise our plans to suit His leading. That way, He remains Lord of our planning!

Yes, I was not being very clear.

What I'm asking is if it is possible that the message to "study the mind" is something other than taking up psychology as a vocation?

Could it be a call to study the mind for your own personal gain?
Could it be a call to study how the mind is an important part of business transactions?

Great answer. I havent really had any other witnesses. Going off of one person isnt a good idea.

When Hannah came to Eli the priest and poured out her heart to him, he told her, "Go and do what is in your heart." As the high priest at the time, he had the authority from God to say that to her. Where there is a conflict, that is a sign to stop and wait on God in prayer and in His word until it becomes clear which way you are going to decide to Go. If God doesn't want you to go that way, He will shut the door, and open another door which will be more of a blessing to you.

It is good to test what has been said to you by asking the Lord, "Is this from you?" I had an elder of my church criticise me once after a service, and I walked home in a depressed state. Then I stopped and asked, "Lord, was that criticism from You?" Immediately He said to my heart, "Nope!" That voice was as clear as crystal to me. The depression immediately lifted and I went the rest of my way home rejoicing!
