  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

God whipped'em -- end of story.

Exodus 12:12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.

Who created the Egyptian gods? If it was your God, why? Just to whip'em? And if it was not your God then ...

Who created the Egyptian gods?
The Egyptians -- and for the record, God whipped the primary deity of the Canaanites as well:

1 Kings 18:26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.
27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.
28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.
29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

And He whipped the primary deity of the Philistines:

1 Samuel 5:1 ¶ And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.
2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.

Wrong. The Greek gods were omniscient. They were tested on their omniscience by Tantalus, who served up his son (Pelops) to the gods to see if they would notice- they knew, and threw him to Tartarus.
Tantalus couldn't trick them, but they were good enough at fooling each other. Like, Zeus's dad fell for the lamest trick on earth. So at least in some myths, they clearly aren't omniscient.

As for the Egyptian gods, I'm not as familar with that religion.
Well, aside from the way Osiris was tricked into getting into his own coffin, there were also some interesting beliefs about the judging of dead people's souls. It looks like you could get Egyptian gods to admit you into the afterlife by saying the right things and not letting your heart confess your sins.

I thought he is quoting the bible to support his statement that the egyptians made their gods.

Oh. I see my error. I expect too much from him.

The Greek gods for the most part aren't referring to the first cause. Those are mostly gods. There's also a deeper aspect embedded within the religion which would only have been familiar to them. For example Zeus, Poseidon and Hades are what we refer to as spirit mind and body respectively.
As for the Egyptian gods, I'm not as familar with that religion.
Highly cryptic and complicated. :) But the supreme God or what we call God was known to them as "Neter".

Greg fails at the basics of ancient history too? Yeesh.

Zeus ruled the heavens, Poseidon the waters, and Hades the underground.
The Egyptian god of the earlier dynasties was called Horus, son of Isis and Osiris, sometimes Ra in the later dynasties. Khert Neter is where you go when you die.

Yes. It seems you will do anything except to back up your faith. You claim that Egyptians made their gods and then show no evidence. At least I would expect you to give a relevant quotation from the Bible.

So guess what. Your love can take a hike.

Why do you think Exodus refers to the Egyptian gods as if they're real?
Apparently the Exodus 12:12, which he quoted, tells that the LORD will execute judgment against them. People and beasts are punished by killing (in loving manner) their first born. Quite logical though, beasts were guilty because... ???
Ugh, sorry. God works in mysterious ways.

Because that's how the Egyptians viewed them; and God treated them from their perspective.

The Ten Plagues were not just arbitrary plagues -- they were aimed at Egyptian deities, and showed God's mastery over them.

I don't suppose there's a particular reason why God treats them from the perspective of the Egyptians when the text was intended for the Jews?

From what I understand (I'm an ex-Christian), it was sort of a propaganda mechanism to say 'my God, Yahweh, is stronger than your gods'. One facet of this is that the first few plagues were repeatable on a smaller scale by the Egyptian sorcerers. Than Yahweh kicks it into the next gear with plagues that they cannot reproduce even on a small scale.
