My iMac was having problems and then it wouldn't boot up fully - I thought that maybe I should offer God something to help me but I couldn't think of anything I wanted to do... (I considered trying to be a proper Christian and tell others about Jesus, etc)
I decided that as soon as it boots up I'm going to run "Time Machine" to backup the computer.

Then "first aid" wouldn't work and it ended up wiping the computer. Luckily on another computer I could access the saved passwords and bookmarks on Chrome. I also thought I'd lose access to my webserver - I had expected to have to redo the websites but it looks like I can make a backup then create another server with a new key. I am very fortunate about that... I could find emails that mentioned the PEM key file but I hadn't saved it anywhere. I thought to myself that that is just teasing me - so close but no cigar...

But I've lost all of my documents from the past few years. Luckily I handed in my uni assignment a few days ago and it isn't that hard to recreate the assignments that are due soon.

When I was in hospital I thought that God can use "tough love"... maybe that is the case now? I also remember the passages about being God-fearing...

I wonder if they will ever devise an AI device that would learn how to recover any lost data, sorta like AlphaZero for Go and Chess.

why would God use tough love on you? i used to believe God was like that (always waiting to punish me) until very recently. part of the CPTSD and OCD. i am learning that God is love and sometimes bad things jsut happen.

When I read this one line on John Clay's First Aid print out...
    'performing fsck_hfs-fy-x /dev/rdisk0s2' ...
I knew we needed AI help. LOL

    Tough love - Wikipedia
"....Tough love is an expression used when someone treats another person harshly or sternly with the intent to help them in the long run...."

Well I don't really feel like I "need" God... (and I didn't feel I needed to back up things with Time Machine and iCloud, etc) I'd say that some things in the Old Testament seemed to involve "tough love" (and maybe including Job). Anyway at the moment I'm still not taking God very seriously... I sometimes have "hubris".

Well I've learnt a few things from this and it is causing me to have clean installs of the operating system while in the past the main computer was mostly full of junk (even when I deleted what I could... it's about 90% full)

Perhaps this is an example of God's presence leaving me... lately I've been very fortunate and lucky... then this shows what life without God can be like... (but God was merciful how I was able to access my passwords and even my entire browsing history in Chrome)

I'm not usually one to dump verses, but I think it's good to get a clear picture. I don't think it helps to barter with God, because you don't have anything that he needs. If you have something to offer God, then you do it freely, out of a thankful heart, not with the expectation of receiving something in return. If you want something from God, then you ask, and that's the best that you can do.

We get no guarantees, and God does not have a return policy.

Actually when I was in hospital I was manically high... I was there from January to March 2019. I also had 6(?) ECT treatments... that affected my cognitive abilities a lot - before I used to program from 30 hours a week then I wasn't even up to 8 hours a week. But I used the skills I learnt to make PHP websites...

What about verses about fearing God? At the moment I don't take that seriously.

God uses tough love sometimes. I don't think this is it, though.

Data loss sucks, you have my condolences. (I wouldn't recommend e-mailing that key, though - put it on a USB drive instead).

Well this is another case when I think God was involved (and things didn't go as badly as they could have) but other people, including Christians, would just think this is a coincidence.

Well with Time Machine the key would have been backed. This is a good opportunity to use it because the computer is empty (rather than having 450+Gb to back up)

And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, [even] to them that are called according to [his] purpose.

Yes I think that is the case for me. I even think I'm glad this happened...

I tried asking. Btw I thought God wants us to love him with our whole being or at least try to put him first.

What I found interesting was that my data was still there (in theory) then I thought about doing something for God but decided not to then I accidentally wiped everything (in a couple seconds but the option wasn't obvious)

I think God actually wants to help you - it's just that he's more of a Windows user. :)

I've got Windows computers too but I came to prefer Macs after using them in my programming job in the past. Also it is easier to make iPhone apps if you have a Mac...

While I'm reinstalling things on the iMac that was wiped I've been using a iMac mini - I got it from work when I stopped programming 8 hours a week - their office was closing down anyway.
Now I've got to install MS Office... I had been using an illegal copy but now I might be able to get it for free since I'm currently a university student (doing game design).

At this point in time I seriously believe that I prefer what situation I'm in now than how it used to be where my computer would pause a lot and have trouble restarting/shutting down, etc. Now I've got a chance to make things organised and use iCloud and other cloud storage options.

BTW I found a 2 TB portable HDD just lying around that I wasn't really using (I had 4K HDR videos on it that I used to use with my TV - so I'll use that for Time Machine. I also had a license for Paragon so I can read/write NTFS on a Mac). My computer situation is about abundance... I use a 32 inch TV for my Windows 10 computer and at the moment I'm using that for my iMac mini... I haven't spent money on computers for years and when I do they're normally second hand. My iMac is a 2011 model - and it is about the last model that you can upgrade the RAM - I've had it upgraded to 12 Gb. (the iMac minis are 4 Gb :()

I'm really pleased that Chrome loads all the passwords, history and all of bookmarks from the Cloud automatically... if this was a few years ago maybe it would have been a different story...

Now with MS Office it is simple to autosave the files to the cloud....

I was talking to a sister about this.... she's written 3 Christian books... (some notes...)

She also mentioned Romans 8:28!!! That's the same verse I mentioned in post 12!!!!

That's the only verse she mentioned initially... then later she mentioned

    Psalms 147:11
    Matthew 10:28
    Ecclesiastes 12:13
    Proverbs 19:23
    Psalms 34:9
    Proverbs 9:10

He does, but you can't really barter for love. Reminds me of a Beatles song.

I thought it was a wake-up call that I don't take God seriously... Though salvation doesn't require works, surely Christians should take God seriously.

If I can be saved despite my current approach to God that's fine with me
