Who are patriots under God? Lexico.com defines a patriot as a “person who vigorously supports their country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors.” So, as far as a patriot is concerned, there is a country involved.
But is it any country, as far as God is concerned? It is only a country that rules under God. Romans 13:1 infers that a country that rules under God is one that rules as an extension of God, reflecting what He wants according to what He breathed into the Bible.
A country is a function of who governs it. Some say the governing authorities are appointed by the people, and some say the governing authorities appoint themselves. Some say the governing authorities are appointed by God. For those who love God, God has a hand in all these instances. Daniel 2:21 says that He removes kings and sets up kings, and He gives wisdom to such who are wise and knowledge to such who have understanding.
Where a nation is under God and the governing authorities decide that the people determine who shall be the presiding authorities in the government, God has a hand in whom the people decide. Such people, in accordance with Romans 13:1, would want the authorities to rule as an extension of God. What does God stand for? He stands for loving your neighbor and helping the poor and needy. He stands for loving Him and protecting those who love Him.
Under God, a patriot supports a country under God. Where the will of the people who worship God determines who will lead and provide for them, the people defer to such a government. All the laws, rules, procedures, and other mechanisms that have been etched into the rule of a country under God, are respected by those in such a country under God. Any person who supports and defends such a country is a patriot under God.
Romans 13:1 says to LET every person be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God. There may be governments who do not preside with God in mind, but since Romans 13:1 is in the Bible, we can presume that a government that Romans 13:1 refers to is a government whose authority is from God. As to the role of such a government, Romans 13:4 says that such a government is God’s servant for your good. And “good” is whatever God considers to be good, as referred to in the Bible. The Book of Genesis, for instance, delineates what God considers to be good. Any person who supports and defends such a government is a patriot under God.
Where God has given His approval to the way a government set up, its existence is continuous. Notably, Proverbs 28:2 says, “When a land transgresses, it has many rulers, but with a man of understanding and knowledge, its stability will long continue.” There are countries, both in the Bible and after biblical times, who have not governed with the people in mind. How many times has the rulership, in terms of the type of government, turned over in those lands? They did not rule under God. The knowledge that Proverbs 28:2 refers to is the knowledge of what God wants and what to do for Him. Stability comes when rulers, aka governments, act on the basis of the knowledge, in deference in according to such knowledge, that Proverbs 28:2 refers to. So, any person who supports and defends such a government is a patriot under God.
Can a person who acts to subvert such a government, or any government under God, by attacking the mechanisms it has set up to govern, be considered a patriot? How is a person, calling themselves a patriot, defending the government in that instance? What aspect and mechanisms of such a government is the person supporting and defending? Is there an answer?
In closing, Psalms 33:12 says “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!”
