A nation asserts that it is a nation under God. Ideally, this would conform to Romans 13:1 which says there is no authority except those which have been instituted by God, meaning that those who so rule will do so as an extension of God’s authority. God’s authority encompasses everything He stands for.

What does He stand for? He stands for the commands of everyone loving Him, and their neighbor as they would love themselves. But in that realm is the expectation that those who accept a rule under God will do so by acting as one body in accordance with 1 Corinthians 12:12-26. Under that passage, everyone is a part of a greater unit which loves God. Under that passage, however we love God is a matter of contributing to the whole, inasmuch as it is represented in His Scriptures.

Individuals may attend church, but in that church all individuals make up a congregation. All the churches in a country under God act as one constituency in loving God, to the extent they abide by what God wants. Under God, every individual is a part of a whole. When an individual goes their separate way, the unit is broken, causing other individuals to fall away like pearls on a necklace so there’s no necklace left. And just like no necklace is left, there is no unit.

An authority under God looks upon the nation as one people, a nation of individuals contributing to and depending on eachother. Directives that are issues by a government under God are directives from God Himself.

Several things may upset this relationship. You can have individuals that don’t abide by what God wants. In doing so, they are de-facto rebelling against a government that governs under God. We see such individuals who rebel against safety measures put out by the government that contribute to the safety to all that are under the government’s authority. Their RESENTMENT of such a government amounts to a resentment of God.

You might also have a government that purposely rules on its own with no regard to God. They may rule over people who are God-fearing, but in such a nation there exists some who are not so God fearing and it is because of them that they, and those that ARE God-fearing, would end up being under the rule of a godless government. Those who aren’t God-fearing are like the body parts described in with 1 Corinthians 12:12-26 who, if the whole is not composed of just those body-parts then they will not belong and the whole is broken, leaving a hole, so to speak.

Those people do not realize that just as they contribute something that is unique to the whole, there are others that are different from them that can contribute to the whole as well. As 1 Corinthians 12:14-17 says, “For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,’ that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,’ that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell?”

If a nation were composed only of, say, peace-loving farmers, then where is the nation’s defense? And if a nation were composed only of those who defend it, then where is the nation’s prosperity? And if a nation were composed only of people who hate, then where is the nation’s love? And if a nation were composed only of those who give way to others, then where is the direction given to people as a whole? The idea of unity is expressed in terms of Lord Jesus who in Matthew 12:25 says, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand.” Such a kingdom, city or house would be like pearls on a necklace having fallen away so no necklace is left.

Under God, there is no division when everyone loves God and eachother in a manner that is worthy of God’s Blessing.

Nero was not ordained by God. Hitler was not ordained by God. Stalin was not ordained by God.

Whether you know the value of a pearl or not, submitting to the government and paying your taxes may be prudent. It is not the same as winning the approval of God.

Nero, Hitler and Stalin were not extensions of God's authority. And for that matter, how they fit in God's Plans is something that can be debated forever without an answer being reached.
