God wants to hear from us in prayer. God wants us to share every aspect of our lives with Him. Then God wants us to listen. We should be listening for God’s response after every prayer. In fact, listening is probably the most important part of prayer. Our loving heavenly Father wants to direct our steps and keep us moving in the right direction. We can’t do that if we are not listening for his instruction. As believers, we are children of God and like all parents we are his most prized possession.

“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” John 1:12-13

The Holy Spirit

Of course, we are not going to hear God’s voice calling to us from above, and we’re not going to get a text message or email from God, but He is going to communicate with us in a very direct way. God is able to speak to each and every individual believer all at the same time. He does this through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and through the pages of the Bible. Most importantly, God speaks to us through the teachings of Jesus.

“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.” Hebrews 1:1-2

The Teachings of Jesus

As a believer, God has communicated, through Jesus, the profound understanding of our salvation and the gift of eternal life. And it is Jesus that continues to communicate with us through His teaching found in the pages of the Bible. When we study the teachings of Jesus, guided by the Holy Spirit, God will, without question, communicate directly to each of us. But we can’t just read – we have to listen. We have to place the teachings of Jesus in our minds by reading the Bible and then carry that instruction with us all day long – listening for God’s communication.

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3

We need God’s guidance. Without Jesus we are wandering in the dark. God sent Jesus to point the way to light and truth. It is the duty of every believer to study the teachings of Jesus and then listen for God’s guidance as we meditate on that teaching every minute of every day. We are children of God and therefore should be dedicated to following our loving Father’s instruction.

Connecting with God

Nothing is more important than listening to what God has to say to us. If we discount this understanding as rare or even unattainable, we are missing out on a deeper connection to God. Keep in mind, God is waiting on you to start the conversation. Share your thoughts with God, then open your Bible and read the teachings of Jesus – as you read – listen. God is waiting to communicate with you. Our goal is to become as much like Jesus as we possibly can. Listening for God, while reading His Word, is without question, the best way to make that connection. Pay close attention and He will tell you great and unsearchable things.
