The world’s population will reach 8 billion people on Tuesday, representing a “milestone in human development” before birth rates start to slow, according to a projection from the United Nations.

In a statement, the UN said the figure meant 1 billion people had been added to the global population in just 12 years.

Environmental impact

Reaching an 8 billion global population “is an occasion to celebrate diversity and advancements while considering humanity’s shared responsibility for the planet,” UN Secretary General António Guterres said in the UN statement.

Having more people on Earth puts more pressure on nature, as people compete with wildlife for water, food and space. Meanwhile, rapid population growth combined with climate change is also likely to cause mass migration and conflict in coming decades, experts say.

And whether it’s food or water, batteries or gasoline, there will be less to go around as the global population grows. But how much they consume is equally important, suggesting policymakers can make a big difference by mandating a shift in consumption patterns.

Carbon emissions of the richest 1%, or about 63 million people, were more than double the emissions of the poorest half of humanity between 1990 and 2015, according to a 2020 analysis by the Stockholm Environment Institute and non-profit Oxfam International.

Resource pressure will be especially daunting in African nations, where populations are expected to boom, experts say. These are also among the countries most vulnerable to climate impacts, and most in need of climate finance.

we cause the lack of food and resources through our sinful ways.
I agree.

Look at India.

While "sacred cows" roam the streets in front of everyone, Hindus are starving to death.

And you know what?

Academia thinks we should give equal airtime to these "sacred cows"!

I don't believe in the supernatural concept of sin, but I ultimately agree with the principle of what is to blame for the problems associated with population.

8 billion is a lot of mouths to feed... but it's a total distraction from how uneven and inconsistently resources are used in the world.

A wealthy couple could claim to be child free and vegetarian to protect the planet, while still consuming more resource rich luxuries than any 100 people in the third world.

(Just to clarify, I whole heartedly support individuals trying to do the right thing... but the reality of world should be something we keep in mind.)

I think you aught to be aware of the beam in your eye when talking about religious hypocrisy as an American Christian.

You specifically attacked the religious practices of another culture... while in your own culture wealth and luxury is maintained by prominent Christians while others are in great need.

We're doing something about it too: we're sending missionaries to India to tell them about Jesus Christ.

That way, they'll learn their cows are okay to eat, and that should take care of the problem.

Academia, on the other hand, might go over there and build a well or two, but will respect their oppressive religion and give the Trimurti equal airtime with Jesus Christ.

Academia: Here you go, India. Here's a shipload of wheat out in your harbor. Come and get it, if you can.

Christianity: Have a steak dinner tonight.

The world is the Most High’s and the population isn’t a problem. There’s enough resources for everyone. Greed and unwise stewardship created compromises and correction is underway and no one wants to talk about it. God is a just God. You can’t sin unrepentantly without consequences. Man devices new schemes to cover his misdeeds. But everything hidden will be revealed. At some point the jig is up and the truth comes out. I’m looking forward to it.

Missionaries won't do much good in India. India has a population of 1.3 billion with about 30 million or 3% Christians. Contrast this to the US with 63% presently. Yet, Christianity in the U.S. is quickly shrinking and may no longer be the majority religion within just a few decades.

The part of US Christianity I do not like is their interference in politics. On the other hand there are many christian charitable organization like St Vincent de Paul that serve the poor, the suffering, and the deprived.

The seat of every major non-Christian religion – Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Animism, Atheism, and Sikhism – is headquartered in the 10/40 Window.

Over population is just one part of the problem of living in a finite world and are now at the point that not enough to go around for everyone.

Besides over population the world has to learn to deal lower agricultural production, nonrenewable resource depletion, diminishing industrial output, pollution generation and climate change.

Which has near zero affect on religious conversions. The vast majority of people remain in the religion they are born in with many in name only.

Then why did God give us the Great Commission?

That's why it's called being "born again."

And just out of curiosity, do you agree that Hindus turning to Christianity will solve their hunger problems?

The goal determines the narrative. I’m not interested in what they say. I’m focused on what they’re after. That’s the real McCoy. You can spin a lie twenty different ways and discover the hearer’s vulnerability and tailor future messages with that in mind. Guile is subtle. It's rarely obvious.

You are providing us with "religious" beliefs that may or may not be in accord with the beliefs of other world religious be;lief. There is no way to know which beliefs are true or not. In many countries there is freedom of religion. What do you think would prompt other religions to adapt christian beliefs that have nothing to do with with their own beliefs?

One of your typical bigoted ignorant posts.
In neighboring Bangladesh which is a Muslim country were one can eat cows, was one of the poorest nations on Earth after its independence from Pakistan in 1971.
It decided to go down the "academia" line by boosting its HDI (Human Development Index) with stunning success.

hdiRoadMap.png

Bangladesh has been able to reduce the poverty rate from 44.2 percent in 1991 to 13.8 percent in 2016-2017. The per capita income has also jumped from $2,024 in 2019-2020 to $2,554 in the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Not to mention, Bangladesh maintained a positive GDP growth rate during Covid-19 when big economies like India experienced a decline in GDP. In 2020, Bangladesh ranked 133rd out of 189 countries on Human Development Index (HDI). The HDI score of Bangladesh has increased by 60.4 percent since 1990. Lastly, Bangladesh was ranked 94th among 146 countries in the recently published World Happiness Index (WHI) which reflects Bangladesh’s success in ensuring human security overall.

Positive policy interventions by the Government of Bangladesh are another reason behind the success. The Bangladesh government has taken several policy measures concerning maternal and child nutrition, social safety nets, and primary and secondary education. For instance, Bangladesh’s budget now has a dedicated segment to address the nutrition issue. Article 15 of the Bangladeshi constitution mandates that the government supply people with food and other essentials if necessary. The government also launched the National Nutrition Project. Moreover, the Bangladesh government also inaugurated more innovative programs like Food for Education (FFE) to encourage parents to send their children to school, while at the same time, ensuring the food security of a family. Because of these policies, we can see that the child mortality rate has decreased and life expectancy has increased substantially in Bangladesh.
The key to success is education and knowledge which is a anathema to you.
Hindus eating cows isn't going to solve hunger issues as cows don't grow off trees and require a financial investment.
The "academia" approach is the way to go.
