I always thought, since Sting was an English teacher and comes across as an intellectual, that this song was a hat tip to Dadaism. I mean, both are senseless, for sure. But, nope. He swears it's a comment on the profundity of simple songs and the Do-Wah culture of early rock-n-roll. Some intellectual he is, lol.
