I looked at riaa.com and i couldnt believe how many records hes sold! over 100 million! i remember listening to his stuff when i was little and i realized my friend had one of his cds. so i popped it in and i looove it. now im more of a heavy metal, hard rock guy and i normally hate country, but garth brooks is just soo likeable. he can be liked by anybody. but its a shame that he retired at such an early time. this does show that he was making music for the money and not for the fans or the sake of making music.

Thank God he retired. After what he did to country music, he should be shot.
I have heard a lot of people say stuff like that but I just don't get it. could you please explain this to me?

Anyway, My Mom used to play nothing but country music when I was little, and Garth was one of her favorites, so I came to like him too. Now I am mostly into metal but I still can't turn down a good country song (even though I am sometimes embarassed to abmit it :p ). Belleau Wood is my all time favorite Garth Brook song btw, I could just play that song over and over and over....

99% of what you hear on "country" radio has nothing to do with country music. Garth Brooks paved the way for the pop country invasion.

I listened exclusively to Country music years ago. I can't remember which song I heard a few seconds of recently, but the lyrics were, "They've got the Jr., but they forgot the Hank."
Country music doesn't exist anymore.
Garth Brooks makes me want to puke. I don't think he could sing his way out of a brown paper bag. So my issue with him is the fact that he sucks.

I ditto the guy above me.
But I saw the light the first time I heard Black Sabbath. It was in the 8th grade. I've been a morose metal head ever sense.

*laughs* I like quite a few Garth Brooks songs but I agree, he is pop country and most definitely not real country. And the reason why he retired was because he was getting a divorce from his wife and realized that he hadn't been a good father to his three girls so he wanted to take time off for them. To be their father instead of Garth Brooks: SUPERSTAR! I think that's a pretty good reason to retire myself.

true.

pop has taken over almost all of the major music types.but, pop-country is played because people want to hear it.

Garth has a lot of great songs, but I like most of his older stuff (first three albums are my favorites of his) better than the newer stuff he'd put out. He's a controversial guy in country music...as evidenced by this thread! :) Some like him, some don't...and that's okay. I love classic/traditional country, but I also like most of his stuff, as well as most other modern-day country music.

You're blaming the downfall of the country music genre totally on Garth? Yikes. Maybe you should start with Nashville record executives and then the population that buys the albums?

I'm a massive country fan, and I've never heard a Garth Brooks. He isn't played on the country music station here in Brissie. I've considered picking up a CD, but with the response most country fans give towards him I'm not convinced he's worth my money.

Try finding and listening to a few songs of his online before buying. I enjoy quite a bit of his stuff. He's not horrible. Some people are just bitter. ;) Some of it's "fun" music. Some of it touches your heart. Take a listen and then you decide.
