The brouhaha over the HHS mandate points out, more than anything, how much better off we would have been with a government-run, national healthcare system. Are people wringing their hands and beating their breasts about these things in Canada and Europe? No, they have the time and energy to deal with the other serious problems our world governments and economies need to be concerned about.

Of course, I have seen some Catholics, like a columnist I formerly respected, Mary Beth Bonacci, call for an end to health care entirely.

That's like amputating a leg to cure a hammertoe.

Haven't you heard? We're all in mortal sin for living in such evil, degenerate countries.

Its against Our Constitution so it doesnt matter what other countries do.
Its not our thing...and we like our freedoms the way they are meant to be.

Why does every other person in another country think we are wrong for having our own way of life?

You like your way - good, happy for you. That does not mean Americans want it.

I suspect Fantine grew up in the 60's in college and has not left that era. Its just suspect. And that era was wrong for our country and Obama is wrong too.

Just because we have socialist sympathizers - is no way agreed upon by folks who love how our Constitution kept us free so far.

Who did the world look at as the most wealthy and powerful? America. Why? Because we are - were - free to be so.

There were enough Americans in favour of Obama and his policies for him to get into power. I don't know what Americans want, so I can't really comment.

Does America being wealthy and powerful really have all that much to do with freedom? Britain was the most wealthy and powerful for a long time, I don't think freedom was at play there. Likewise, Spain was hugely powerful for a long time and freedom really didn't come into play there.

Back on topic, fantine points out that Catholics are more free to practice our beliefs about contraception under a more universal scheme than the one currently being put forward in America.

Don't take me too seriously though :) I'm not in America and I haven't really followed along with this mandate.

Freedom from religion isn't much of a freedom at all is it??

It is a form of oppression that limits ones' morality to grayness. It has no guarantee whatsoever for a better life. It would strangle the soul to death for not feeding on the Word of God which bread (physical foods and drinks) alone cannot satisfy and save oneself from existing on Earth.

Freedom *from* religion makes us slaves to the world's whims.

Yes, saying you are a Christ follower, doesn't mean that you are. Some people need to belong to a church, and don't really know why ,but hoping maybe something will rub off,and let them into 'heaven' by association with... It always makes me ....when I see how little insight they have to their condition. :D:D

I heard on my local news this afternoon that they want to put some clause or another... where if you need B/C for medical reasons, you must run this by you employer first and he/she has to approve it? and we are hollering something about freedom?

This is the kind of thing I'm afraid of. We over-reacted with Obama, and now are too capitalist.

capitalism is condemn by the Church.

alls I know this is against the privacy act. Its none of your employers beeswax to know why you take anything. and unless you work for a moral theologian, he's gonna make the call that you are taking it for moral reasons? Who the heck is he?
