When I am not building webpages and working on the police force I help a friend with his web hosting services.

We offer more then the usual Webhosting, we do custom packages, and we are up to date on the latest languages.

I've heard horror stories of people registering their domain name with a hosting company, and the domain name being locked in the company's name. When they've wanted to redirect the domain name to a different server the hosting company said no, thus forcing them to have to stay with that company.

One of those internet stories I heard from a friend, so i don't know how much truth there is in it...

with the 1&1 offer, what happens after the three years. Do you have to continue with their service?

I would say if you decide to stay with them that you will be paying the regular $29.00 per month fee. About whether you will be able to transfer to another host I don't know. I suppose since you can transfer to them you should be able to transfer from them as well. You will have to talk with them about that or any other questions you have. I was just sharing this with you all since I see it as a great deal.

if you go to http://www.firsthostweb.com/ you can have free web hosting forever. You pay a $50usd signup fee and never pay another dime. It's very good. I use them myself. Worth looking at.
FYI - I used Firsthostweb.com for 2 sites and it was fine for the first 30days then it was down hill. I ended up pulling both sites off their servers after 6 months

Wow, seems almost to good to be true...
That should be a red flag that it's not a good thing to go with.

First problem with this host is their bandwidth offer of "No limits on simultaneous hits/bandwidth". This is impossible to provide. Allowing unlimited hits and/or server requests could possibly cause their server to shut down. I believe a typical server can handle about 20-25 requests at one time.

I have just performed a few searches for 1&1 at a few different sites, from what I have read they have terrible support. Also a lot of people have stated that 1&1 have many restrictions in their TOS, which seems to be burried quite deep in their site. 1&1 also has a Firewalled MySQL server, which allows requests only from their own servers.

All in all, like I'd say about any 'free' host, don't go with it. You can find good paid hosting quite cheap, onehost.ws provides $0.99 hosting.

I still have my site there, and have had for a year. I'm very happy with them. It's funny how individual experiences vary..

Here's my site, to take a look at how it functions: http://www.northernprotocol.com/

What is a good amount to expect to pay for hosting? I have seen it vary wildly.
It really depends on what you plan on using it on. If you take a look at http://webhostingtalk.com/ quite a few people will always be happy to hook you up with a custom plan, and the different people allow you to compare prices.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that I created a topic about 1&1 here.
