Dozens of deaths reported after truck drives into crowd in Nice, France in Bastille Day attack.

The local prefecture has urged people in the area to remain indoors, calling the incident "an attack".

Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi said that "a lorry driver appears to have killed dozens of people".

He urged residents to stay indoors.

Some reports spoke of shots being exchanged between police and the occupants of the lorry but these have not been confirmed.

Social media video showed people running through the streets in panic following the incident.

A journalist with the Nice Matin newspaper reported from the scene that there was "a lot of blood and without doubt many injured".

Police made more than 50 arrests in Paris overnight as Euro 2016 ended in further football-related violence.

Gangs of youths fought running battles with squads of heavily armed police around the Eiffel Tower and the Champs Elysee.

The world-famous attraction has been forced to close today as a huge clean-up operation begins.

Tear gas and baton charges were used before, during and after France’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Portugal in the final of the competition.

"The arrests were for a variety of offences including disorder and vandalism," said a Paris police spokesman.

The reporting on this is currently ongoing live, but the latest report is 75 dead and over 100 wounded by what is being called by French authorities a terrorist attack. The attacker drove a large truck at high speeds into a crowds of people, littering the streets with victims for at least a mile. He then exited the vehicle and began to fire on the crowd, until he himself was shot by police.
