I want to offer a fourth possible reason: It may be that those that would have been the most vulnerable to the new varients (a staggering 600,000 plus) are already dead from the initial infection of covid-19.

Good point. Many likely died of something else but were listed as covid deaths if they tested positive or were being treated for covid.
