America needs to get control of its police agencies. Police have, over time, acquired privileges far beyond what normal citizens enjoy which allow them to run roughshod over their communities.

It is a dangerous and thankless job. But those people who can't handle it properly HAVE to be weeded out before they kill, not after they kill.

It will never happen. Police in America are a fraternal order; they are protected by several adjacent agencies and unions. It goes way beyond guns in America: that is a separate issue with all Americans.

Besides, it is clear these people don't matter enough for there to be change. As history has shown, when it affect groups that matter, things will change.

Maybe remove the IQ limit.

If you remove the IQ limit, subordination without question will be harder to breed into the mind of the employee. Additionally, with a higher IQ allegedly comes a higher moral compass, and a better way to navigate problems in multiple ways.

It isn't so much the IQ as it is the ability to follow orders, and protect your fellow "brothers in blue" that is studied (as with most all agencies). But, a low(er) IQ is allegedly a broader indicator that someone can at least be trained to be subordinate to their superiors.

I guess now we just wait to see if charges will be filed...

The guy has to be fired. Even if he just did it out of stupidity, which at the very least is the case, they need to get him out of there....just that simple. If they determine him racist, he needs to get a lot worse.

Let the punishment fit the crime, but also do all we can to make sure we dig out what the real crime is.

I'm surprised nobodies asked the question, who plays video games with their nephews at 2.20am?

The "Cool Aunt" - who the rest of her sibling's children refer to her as.

The analogue would be the "Cool Uncle" who takes you hunting with a BB gun when you are a pre-teen.

One perk of the aunt/uncle is that s/he can do the "cool" things responsible parents cant do with their kids, they are part of the family, and the kids get protected experience without worrying about too much discipline from the parents (since, your brother/sister is your peer). The mother could have been at work, and the aunt found a constructive way to alleviate the extra energy of her nephew. We won't know her side, because she is dead for nothing.

I love all of you opining about law enforcement with no knowledge of the subject. I spent 10 years doing internal affairs investigation and criminal investigations of LEOs in other agencies as part of my duties. They were complete and unbiased investigations many of which resulted in disciplinary actions and criminal convictions. Many also resulted in vindication of the officers.

One of the negative aspects of being a motor cop was doing funeral escorts for LEOs who died in the line of duty. There were far to many.

I will change my avatar when there are no LEOs killed in the US for a month.

I do think the officer needs to be charged. If he were doing a welfare check; shouldn't he have gone to the front door , knocked, and announced he was a police officer coming in to check on a person? Peering through a window and just shooting whatever moves makes no sense to me. There are rules in place for welfare checks from law enforcement; did he follow that or not?

I've said over and over again that the job is dangerous. Not everyone is suited for the job. The ones who are not suited should be dismissed from the career long before citizens get shot and killed.

Not in this thread, but I've also have promoted better training for LEOs so they are better equipped to deal with with issues they find in the field. I am also a supporter of better gun control throughout the society which will reduce the danger to LEO.

All of these things are important for any government agency which presumes to operate a law enforcement operation.

But none of these things changes the fact that citizens are being shot and killed by LEO without valid reasons and at an un-acceptable rate.

I see no reason whatsoever for you to ever change your avatar. Any loss of live through violence should be mourned.

um... k

There are roughly as many unarmed people killed in the US by police every year as there are police killed by assailants.

If an officer shows up at a property in the middle of the night, snoops around the backyard with a flashlight, then, without identifying a threat, without identifying himself, and without giving any legitimate warning, shoots and kills the homeowner through a window, then the officer done screwed up pretty badly. The priority in that situation should be to the homeowner's safety, not to the officer's. The officer obviously failed to consider the possibility that the homeowner was in the house and that he and his behavior would've appeared suspicious to that homeowner.

When my grandson stays over I play with him at such times. When he’s not there I play online with my sons.

Your question is a non sequitur.
