This kind of thing is mentioned in Revelations, which suggests to me it will be on the increase. I've wondered though, if it's outright demon worship, or indirect through the worship of idols (which scripture says a demon is behind every idol). Probably both.

Rev 9:20-21

And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:

I agree it can be both as you point out. But the case in the OP is pretty amazing. That guy also has a series of books titled "Incredible Answers to Prayer" - He was a shoe salesman and a phone-book ad salesman who dedicated himself to prayer.
