Wow, this is both ironic and messed up...

Tampa Bay hospitals push COVID vaccine — but won’t mandate it for their workers

Thousands of local doctors, nurses and medical workers are unvaccinated. For now, their employers will not mandate COVID-19 vaccines.

“Cast members” at Disney World must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the end of October to continue playing Darth Vader, Gaston and Scrooge McDuck at the Orlando resort. The vaccine is also mandatory for pharmacists at CVS, and workers at United Airlines and meat and poultry producer Tyson Foods.

But that is not the case for most doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and other medical workers treating the record number of COVID-19 patients in Tampa Bay hospitals.

It is neither ironic nor messed up. They advise vaccination but they do not compel vaccination. Which is exactly right for people in a free country. If we are no longer a free country then we can have mandates. It's about that simple.

Wrong, if you're in the healthcare industry, it should be expected...especially if you're working around other patients. This is a disaster in the making. They should be setting the example.

Otherwise, you have no business being in healthcare.

Then hospital workers in the US "simply" do not live in a free country as I have never met one (myself included) who was not mandated (sans medical or religious exemption) to be current on all required vaccines (including annual flu shot) and a TB test annually as a condition of employment. You can, of course, opt out by finding another place to work.

Yeah....chevyontheriver...attempted some kind of red herring. This "free country" thing he's referring to is not even relevant to the conversation.

Have you ever heard that the vaxed can and do get covid as well can and do spread it? It is not like the other vaxs.

Yes. I have even read the package insert to most vaccines which all state efficacy numbers. I have not read a single one yet that states it has a 100% efficacy.

Now, what does that have to do with the previous poster's assertions that healthcare workers in the US do not live in a free county?

Because it does not work like the other vaxs. Since it does not stop the spread it is useless to stop the spread.

Which vaccine has a 100% efficacy?

This comes down to the simple fact when one signs an employment contract, then the employee either fulfills the contract or be should be terminated. This is not about a "free country", this is about work ethics and fulfilling a contract one freely agreed to.

Yes it is about a free country. The vaxed are just as dangerous to others as the unvaxed. That is what is wrong here. It is pointless as a "vax". Those which have natural immunity are more fit than the vaxed, to not spread it.

Not all Hospitals in Tampa.

Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital and Mayo both mandate it. As do several others. If you live in Tampa it is time to start making a list in case you need a hospital trip.

Those names seem familiar!

Oh and the V.A., At least veterans get taken care of properly.

Bad

Exactly. In Hospitals the vaccine should be absolutely mandated for those that can get it. It is the freedom of ever business to mandate vaccines in a free country. Seems some think more of freedom then other peoples health to the point that freedom becomes an idol to worship.

It is exactly like every other vaccine, you can still get sick after you get any vaccine you can still sick. Chicken pox, you still get Chicken pox we call it shingles. Etc. For some reason people have no idea what a vaccine is, did they forget or where never taught in school or didn't listen

Make a list for what? Hospitals which employ only those workers who have immunity through having had covid and recovered? The vaxed don't protect from spreading the virus anymore than the unvaxed. This "vax" is becoming another therapeutic.

That's correct, it's not a panacea for preventing any/all transmission...but to be fair, that was never the stated goal.

The goal was to lessen the severity and deaths (as to not burden the medical system), and put a dent in some of the transmission.

Dare I say, it's accomplishing that as planned.

There's a lot of things that aren't perfect (in terms of being a preventative measure) that most reasonable people would agree are a net-positive.

Not sure why so many fall into the trap of the "appeal to futility" fallacy when it comes to covid vaccines.

So it's a therapeutic. It does nothing to stop the spread.

It's about one half of one percent. Which could easily be attributed to a few doses left out too long before injection. Or some other unfortunate thing. Which is exactly like other vaccines. They are not 100%. There is error in how the vaccines are produced or stored or injected.

With regards descriptors like "hospital workers" or "medical workers", it's a carefully selected term meant to convey a certain image in the mind of the reader.

When people hear those descriptors, their mind immediately goes to "highly trained doctors and nurses"

Which is why I said, early on, when right-wing outlets were touting that "40% of medical workers say they don't trust the vaccine", that it was a very misleading description.

"Hospital workers" and "Medical workers" describe a large group of people with a wide chasm in terms of expertise.

'Hospital/Medical worker' could mean an accountant that works at the hospital, a CNA or LPN (two designations of nursing that don't require a heck of a lot of training), a person who works in the cafeteria, or the Attending Neurosurgeon.

It's basically like saying the Software Engineering Technical Lead for Microsoft's OS development team and the 17 year old kid who works at the Geek Squad at Best Buy are both "Tech Workers"...technically a true statement, but those two are not the same thing.

Where certain hospitals are forced to walk the tightrope... some of the "less than expert" employees are in areas where there are already shortages (so they don't want to fire them unless they absolutely have to), but don't want to take the vaccine, so the hospitals are between a rock and a hard place.

For instance, if you're running a hospital, and 40% of the orderlies and janitors don't want to take the jab, but the people filling those positions are needed (and could be hard to replace), they're in a tough spot.

No it is not like other vaccines. Vaccines are to give you immunity. Correct that vaccines are not 100%. Which means you could get the disease anyway. With the covid vaxine, that is not true. They can and do spread the virus, as well as many get sick. That they do not usually get as sick because of the shot, puts it in more of a therapeutic category. Vaxines are for immunity, therefore you do not spread it period.
