I've heard the fire insurance type of preaching to the extreme in some churches.
The Bible never teaches to say a sinners prayer and ask Jesus into your heart, and the use of Revelation 3:20 to say Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart: the heart of an unbelieving sinner is completely taken out of context.
Rev. 3:20 is addressed specifically to a church that are professing believers but lukewarm and feel they got it all together, but are spiritually blinded by their prosperity.
Now as far as emphasizing the need for salvation right now, that is entirely scriptural. -
2 Cor. 6:2 - behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. I know it refers to Christ's coming and Him being the salvation, quoting Isaiah 49:8.
He is here, now is the time, repent, as both John the Baptist & Jesus Himself preached, with urgency.
Acts 2:37-40 - When they heard the word, they were pricked in their heart, and asked, what shall we do? Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ...save yourselves from this untoward generation...
Hebrews 3:7 & 15 - Today if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your heart...
Jude 22 & 23 reveals 2 approaches- And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh...
But in all this you must preach as Jesus did, he that endures till the end shall be saved, to him that overcomes will I give, they overcame him, that is, the dragon, Satan, by the blood of the Lamb and word of their testimony, and loved not their lives unto death, follow peace with all, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish, ye shall know them by their fruits....
Nowhere does Scripture teach fire insurance salvation, for even Romans 10, often used for easy grace, do as you want, contains the line, for with the heart man believeth unto RIGHTEOUSNESS.
2 Tim. 3:16,
All acripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in Righteousness...
Why would a pastor need to use the Word in this way, if we could just "accept Jesus" and live any way we wanted?
Repent & believe the gospel.
Amen.
