The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced Thursday that it was investigating issues with mail-in ballots in Pennsylvania’s Luzerne County after recovering at least nine votes for President Donald Trump that had been improperly discarded.

Left is definitely trying to steal the election.
You don’t steal an election by discarding nine ballots....

No, but it might be an indication of potential problems later this year, especially if the number of mailed ballots increases by 1000% or so.

Precisely. Thefts like this always start small so it looks just like an accident to see if anyone notices, to see what they can get away with.

I’ve been following elections in regards to voter fraud, vote theft, and voter suppression since 2000 when I lived in Palm Beach County and was dropped from the voter rolls for suspicious reasons. The amount of votes that have been lost or suppressed via various techniques is astounding. And the issues with voting machine errors that have never been resolved are also astounding. There has been no presidential election in recent years that has not had many issues and where many eligible people were not able to vote. The Republican Party did not take any of that seriously when it benefitted them. I don’t buy that they suddenly care. Mail in voting is far less susceptible to coordinated voter fraud or suppression than other voting methods. You just can’t steal an ejection that way. But you can steal an election by removing polling locations in certain neighborhoods and manipulation of voting machines. So why are Republicans focused on mail ballots, and not on the ways elections can actually be stolen?

Considering all of the issues we’ve had with voting machines and voter suppression since the 2000 election that have never been resolved, why should our focus be on mail in ballots?

It likely has something to do with this...if the had been in the "secrecy envelope/sleeve" they are rejected. It also explains why some can be attributed to a specific voter and some can't. Just an example of how it could have happened.

If the elector opened the outside envelope and saw that the ballot wasn't in the 'secrecy sleeve' and left the ballot in the outside/mailing envelope they would be able to identify by the barcode who the ballot came from.
However, if the elector removed the 'naked' ballot from the mailing envelope they are now separated and cannot be verified as to who the ballot was from.

In both cases, the ballots would be discarded because they weren't in the 'secrecy envelope/sleeve'.

“At this point we can confirm that a small number of military ballots were discarded. Investigators have recovered nine ballots at this time. Some of those ballots can be attributed to specific voters and some cannot. All nine ballots were cast for presidential candidate Donald Trump.”

Pennsylvania has faced controversy over its mail-in voting process due to the issue of “naked ballots,” meaning ballots that are not inserted into a second “secrecy envelope.” The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled Friday that officials could reject ballots that do not arrive in the second envelope, which is aimed at preventing them from seeing how ballots are filled out. State election officials previously issued guidance telling counties to count the ballots.

MSN! Surely not, MSN would never report something like this.

I don't know why we don't just jettison all this high-tech crap that causes all these problems, and go back to printed ballots that look like this, that you have to physically mark with a pen, then fold it in quarters and deposit inside the ballot box:

That's what a mail-in ballot looks like and you can drop it in a dropbox rather than mailing it or take it to a polling location or the cty clerks office and hand it to them.

We have 11 state ballot measures to vote on this election. I'm glad I can fill my ballot out at home. You can be waiting in line for a long, long time while people fill out their ballots.

Which, if everybody is going to be sent a ballot in the mail as is this year's "hot" innovation, is what we're going to have anyway!
Colorado has been doing this since 2013 and it's working very well.

Except they don't know who actually filled out the ballot, and the voter never knows if it actually arrived on time and counted.

I don't know about there but in my state and several others, the voter can log on to their county website and see if their ballot has been received.

There have always been mail-in and absentee ballots, the voter must sign their signature and the signature is verified.

Having internet access to see if your ballot was received is a plus.

However, there is nothing to tell you whether or not it was counted.

Absentee ballots have been around for a long time now. But the fact is, they're not counted unless necessary. If the absentee ballots won't change the outcome of the election, they don't bother as those doing the counting are volunteers and most want to return to their lives.

FWIW, I don't believe that's true. You may be thinking of write-in votes.

But your comment does touch on an important point, which is that each state makes its own policies on a lot of these matters.

See, for instance, that North Carolina, Michigan, and Pennsylvania--all states that were close in 2016 and were crucial to Trump's victory--have recently changed their policies to one of keeping the counting going for nine days following election day, which could easily allow for whatever hijinks might be necessary in order to get the candidate who trailed on election night over the finish line to victory a week and a half later.

But in other states, it is necessary to win on Election Day, even considering that there are included some absentee ballots.

Then you still get the old

“The people who cast the votes decide nothing; the people who count the votes decide everything”

Attributed to various people over the centuries.
