"You thought that?! You thought I loved Rebecca?! I hated her!"
- Max DeWinter to "the new Mrs. DeWinter"* in "Rebecca"
It's one of my favorite lines because it illustrates how we make ourselves suffer needlessly by assuming we know how someone feels.
*Joan Fontaine plays "the new Mrs. DeWinter," but she is never given a name of her own. No first name and no maiden name. I've read the book, and it's not in there either. I think it's a marvelous idea--in a way she could be any woman, and it also makes her seem to have no identity apart from other people.
I love that movie!
