BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The dream world for Idaho’s ascendant far right is one where state lawmakers run a sovereign nation-state free of federal oversight. It would be a place where they can outlaw all abortions, dictate what is taught in schools, have complete say over public health rules and gun laws, and take control of federal public lands, which make up more than 60% of the state...

Far-right Idaho Republicans battle to control party, state

I’ve never been to Idaho. It sounds like a political insane asylum. Do these far right wing-nuts really think they can become a sovereign nation-state, confiscate federal land, and reject all federal regulations?

Looks like Idaho has more than just potatoes buried in the ground. Like their brains, too.

They would have to secede from the union to do what they want.

    Good luck with that ...

Big parts of the population of that state want to do just that, but not for the same reasons. And they spill into the surrounding states.

So, basically the same as what occurred with part of downtown Portland after it was occupied by Antifa which then renamed it and declared that it had seceded from the United States. Nothing was done to them as a consequence, so it would not be surprising if that fact encourages others. Alaska and Hawaii have been home to their own independence movements for some time now.

No, parts of Oregon and Washington want to leave those states and become part of a different but existing state, not secede from the Union.

Nation state? No just a state in a nation that has/is encroaching on the rights of the states originally had. Not something new, but returning to the original.
It would be a place where they can outlaw all abortions,[/quote] No, only those in the state. But can get one in a state that determines to allow them.
No, they want a return to schools teaching reading, writing, and math. Not indoctrinate them that voids the parents right to parent their children .
They want to return states rights in this nation which their rights as citizens are not taken away by Washington politicians they did not vote for. Do you get that? Our votes need to matter.

That would require an overturn of current rulings. Should that happen I have no doubt that the next step is legislation to curtail the travel of women from the state to keep them from crossing the boarder into Nevada of Oregon as in a post Roe US they will doubtless maintain legal abortion.

I have the same reaction to all of these succession movements: bye Felicia! Let them go and achieve their dreams of being a back water near failed state.

With Idaho it would be very interesting to watch as they stand to lose three of the states top five employers upon exit as they are tied to the federal government followed by those who do not wish to be associated with the sovereign citizen utopia that follows.

There is that group as well, but some of them would jump at making their own nation with their own rules, they wouldn't say no.

It is a big mix of people there that want their own state/nation-state. Even if they break away, I would expect lots of infighting between groups.

    Oh no, actual conservatism!

Why should anyone on the right oppose or fear a state running itself apart from the standards of socialists and democrats?

Idaho is also the nation's capital of the white supremacist movement. They own tons of land up there, bunkers, and camps. I saw a documentary where they brought cameras to an Aryan Nation training site. They are gearing up for the race war they say is coming at any moment. They have a serious stronghold up there

No, current rulings unless you see current rulings as the federal government abolishing states rights, and individual rights. Which you do.
That's because you give the ruling federal authority abolishing states rights and individual rights. Reinstate individual rights and states rights then no problem for anyone really.

Don't know if Idaho has a larger population of these people, but Oregon also has the same with anarchists and marxist. These people always congregate where they have more freedom to operate towards their goal. It does not make the state racist nor communist. Their politicians do.

Yes, that would be great. But like all the totalitarian minded, they will just use that to take over eventually. Both are totalitarian, they want power period.

There are racists on both sides, totalitarians on both sides. Control freaks. that's why.
White supremacy, black supremacy. two sides of the same coin these are. Both don't care about the constitution but will use it for their own means to gain control.

A law banning all abortion runs counter to current rulings and will be struck down unless they are over turned. Pretending this is not the case does not make it so.

It’s not an issue of fear. It’s a matter of law. There’s this thing called the Constitution. Specifically, the 2nd paragraph of Article VI, aka, the Supremacy Clause:

This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any state to the Contrary notwithstanding.

Federal law overrides state and local laws. No state can make or enforce any law that contradicts laws made by Congress. Nor can any state law contravene a federal court ruling.

Well, I don't care much about the American Constitution but it amuses me when the left freak out over people advocating for some pretty tame conservative policy positions. I understand that there was supposed to be an ideal of federalism in the USA. That each sate would run itself according to it's own standards with as little oversight from the federal government as possible. That has gradually been rolled back in effort to promote more centralization and thus are we surprised at the current situation of the USA? People more divided than ever, everything is a national issue?

The Holy Roman Empire will have lasted longer as a decentralized federation of states at this rate.

So I guess federalism is dead then. Why shouldn't Idaho be able to decide what it's education policy should be?

Interesting, but surely that "make our own nation" group is much the smaller of the two. (?)
