Jesus taught his followers about the mustard seed. It is a small seed that sprouted with the autumn/winter rains and grew tall until the spring heat and dryness turned the mustard plants brown. A 19th century traveler reported a mustard plant growing to a height above the head of a rider on a horse on the plain of Acco. I found one growing to 10' 2" above Bethsaida in Galilee.

    Mark 4 (WEB)
30 He said, “How will we liken God’s Kingdom? Or with what parable will we illustrate it? 31 It’s like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, though it is less than all the seeds that are on the earth, 32 yet when it is sown, grows up, and becomes greater than all the herbs, and puts out great branches, so that the birds of the sky can lodge under its shadow.” 33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it. 34 Without a parable he didn’t speak to them; but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.

    Matthew 17:20 (WEB)
... For most certainly I tell you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

The Roman writer Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC) likened faith to one making good on a promise.

    De Officiis, Book 1:23
"And therefore we may follow the Stoics, who diligently investigate the etymology of words; and we may accept their statement that "good faith" is so called because that what is promised is "made good," although some may find this derivation rather far fetched."

I love the Word of God! And when we look at it as Jesus said, a seed, it's even more powerful! Glory!

Both the parable and the seeds are presented to very small children in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Even these children understand, with great wonder, Whose power it is that causes both the seed and the amazing growth. They know it without any adult explanation, needing merely to wonder at the Words of Jesus.
