Acts 1:10 "And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold two men stood by them in white apparel;"
Acts 1:11 "Which also said, "Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, Which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven."
I always took it that they were kind of in amazement in the moment. Not that they were expecting him to return at any time. The angels tell them he will return the very same way he left. They were staring as he went up.
I agree we should not be watching the skies for Christ to return at any time. But we are given the signs and seasons to watch for and told not to be deceived about the subject of his return by both Christ and Paul.
Christ tellls us numerous times to be on watch/watchmen, these verses among others-
Matthew 24:42 "Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come
Matthew 24:43 "But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up."
But when we do see the signs Christ laid out come to pass(Paul being a 2nd witness in 2nd Thes) than we can for sure look up because it is near.
