English Standard Version (ESV) to be issued with Apocrypha

It is my understanding, however, the translators who worked on the corpus of 66 books for the ESV, will not be doing any translation work on the Apocrypha, and that the ESV Apocrypha project was not within the scope of the ESV translation team's work.

Personally, I hope the idea about some other version's Apocrypha is abandoned and a new translation team is put together to produce an ESV-like translation.

Personally, I hope the idea about some other version's Apocrypha is abandoned and a new translation team is put together to produce an ESV-like translation.

It is precisely that sort of expressed desire that will disappoint, if not dismay the ESV's translators.

In view of the fact that these you call brothers described the papacy as the antichrist relatively recently, your pontification is unlikely to be held in much esteem. But there's no harm in trying.

I don't believe the Papacy comes into this at all.

But since you insist, on the question of which books are to be considered scripture, it is the Western traditions of Christianity which have split from the earliest traditions of the Church, because both Roman Catholicism and Protestantism have first denigrated then removed books previously accepted by Orthodoxy.

Martin Luther has this in common then with Rome.

Okay, I think I understand you now.

You're really not interested in online discussion on this subject. You merely want to drop this calumny against the books removed from Protestant Bibles in the 16th century, that they are "of the devil". But when asked for examples of why you feel they are "of the devil", you say you're not making that accusation and when pressed further you admit you ARE making that assertion!

Yes, it does. It is the same "expanded" Apocrypha with the Greek Orthodox books and Psalm 151.

It also has an enhancement over the RSV w/Apocrypha of 1977.

In 1977 the shorter manuscript for Tobit was used to translate the RSV Tobit. The longer version of Tobit with its greater detail and emphasis on Jewish customs and practices in ancient times is very likely the more original version of the text and was used for the NRSV.

Not being a fan of the NRSV, I look forward to dropping it from my use after I get the ESV Tobit.

Excellent news! So it will be by Oxford (IMO a much better publisher in terms of physical quality than Crossways) and it will be a real ESV translation. I look forward to owning one.

Yeah, it solves a problem for me as well. I currently use the ESV for the N.T. and the Hebrew O.T. I use the RSV for the "expanded Apocrypha" issued in 1977, you know, with Maccabees 3 & 4, etc. I use the NRSV, (a version I don't prefer) for Tobit because they (rightly) chose to translate the longer text of the book. Now I can just have the one volume ESV for all of it!

Too bad, but they don't seem to be planning an ESV Enoch and Jubilees!

Thank you for that excellent information! I preordered it from Amazon.com. I didn't know there would be an ESV with the Apocrypha!
