He wants to cut the state department's budget too. As one general said recently, you cut the state department's budget, you'ld better start buying him more ammo.

Yep..."cut all government spending" is the chant, except for when it's spending ridiculous amounts so that "my country can beat up your country!" (in my best 4th grader voice lol).

It's bordering on absurd. Suggest that "hey maybe the government should spend a little to help that homeless guy out if he needs medical care" and it's nothing but baseless accusations about socialism...yet, the prospect of spending over half a trillion on tanks that are going to sit in storage and never get used is a-ok with them because having the ability to "kick butt and take names" is considered an American value...and if you question it, you get accused of hating the troops, or not respecting the fact that the military is "fighting to protect your freedoms", even though our troops haven't had to fight for that since WW2, and then before that, the War of 1812...every military intervention since then has had nothing to do with protecting American freedoms or our nation's sovereignty.

Being "gay friendly" and "liberal" are separate values...there's quite a bit of overlap, but being one doesn't necessarily mean you're the other.

Being "liberal" is, in essence, pushing for larger government overreach, expanded social programs and safety nets, and larger amounts of regulation and taxation.

Being gay-friendly just means you don't want to treat them like second-class citizens by denying them equal protections under the law.

That's the big issue facing our two-party system (and why there were a near-record number of people jumping ship to 3rd parties this last election), "liberal" and "conservative" are starting to be defined by "how much the proposed issue gels with the evangelical set of morals". Therefore, anything that's inline with the bible gets the title of "conservative" and anything against it gets the title of "liberal".

To illustrate how backwards that is, DOMA was considered a "conservative measure". Even though it meant the expansion of government power (a concept that's the opposite of conservative), it was considered "conservative value" because it was in-line with what the evangelicals wanted.
