i have this DVD/CD boombox. It plays DVD's, but has, for some reasons, stopped playing CD's...a message shows, first it says "error", and then it says "no disc".

Any ideas, thoughts, on why this might be happening?

Thanks.

There are different possible answers. (1) The disc could be dirty and needs cleaning with a dry cloth. (2) The disc is flawed and simply will not play. Perhaps it is scratched? (3) The disc is set for a different region of the world, though usually when that happens the machine will tell you that such is the problem.

Well no, because it still plays DVD's ok. :)
IF a car goes forward and turns left okay too,
but won't go backwards and won't turn to the right either, it's broken.

:)
If a person obeys all the commandments, but breaks one of them, they have broken all of them. (Jesus Says)
(just a footnote/ tangent)

There is yet another possibility. For some unknown reason, about 3% of the time, my expensive blu-ray player will not play a disc when I take one out and replace another one in the machine. Hence, in these cases I turn the machine off for a few seconds and then turn the power back on and somehow this almost always solves the problem.

if you have a cd lens cleaner, try using that first.

I got one online from Maxwell
(model#CD-340/item #:190048) and it worked wonderfully!

Best wishes.

Why does it still play DVD's ok?
BEcause it has different mechanisms and different circuits and different sensors and different software/ programming for
DVD's than for CD's, etc ....

You should still use a dry cloth to clean the disc, but I tend to think that you may have a flawed disc. However, while I have encountered flawed discs maybe 1/2-1% of the time, they usually play at first and then freeze later in the disc. Still, it is possible that your is totally flawed and simply will not play.

Yes, that could be the problem as well.

Is this all CDs? Or only one?

Is the CD in question a commercial one or one burned on a computer?

"planned obsolescence" , like balloons, that eventually pop; things made by man eventually stop working. (thus, usually, the "hope of manufacturers everywhere", you will buy a new expensive one, or an inexpensive one that will likewise stop in a few months or a few years, then another, then another, then another .... ad infinitum , mucho dolleros ongoing.... )

Where? Is there some way to check it?

OR, pay a tech to check ,
OR, a friend from assembly group,
OR, an acquaintance ....
OR, a support group for "tragedies with machines" :)
