Donald Trump’s re-election campaign is suing CNN for publishing an opinion piece that argued Trump did not stop Russia from helping the campaign during the presidential election.

The libel lawsuit, filed in the US district court for the northern district of Georgia, argues that CNN published the story on the campaign’s Russia ties despite “an extensive record of statements from the campaign and the administration expressly disavowing any intention to seek Russian assistance”.

Fox News broke the story about Donald suing CNN. It provided this link to the offending CNN editorial and this one to the lawsuit.

Fox News broke the story about Donald suing CNN. It provided this link to the offending CNN editorial and this one to the lawsuit.

By definition, one cannot be defamed if one is already defamed. If Harvey Weinstein were not in jail, he could not be defamed by calling him a liar, for example.

The young man may be smarter than the President, but could sue as a private citizen. The President holds elected office.

And, the President’s life full of lying, cheating and stealing are clearly mitigating factors which supports my contention that he cannot be defamed by definition.

The campaign isn't really a "person" is it? Donald tells lies about people, real people, all the time.

Most of these types of settlements require that the one receiving the settlement keep quiet, most all know that.

News media cannot knowingly print lies about people no matter who that person may be; if they do they can be made to answer for it in court. The simplest solution for them is to admit the lie and apologize; the courts will usually accept that as a remedy unless financial loss can be shown. The media was confronted, refused to recant and now they get to face the reckoning......If more politicians did this there would be fewer lies printed/talked about by the media.

Can a campaign be libeled?

The elements of libel are:

1) Factual inaccuracy
2) Damages
3) In the case of a public figure, malice, meaning the falsehood was either intentional or reckless.

Those can apply to a campaign as much as they do to an individual.
