Did this event surprise God? Did He actually not know that the people of Nineveh would turn to Him until they did?

Over the last many years, a new doctrine has developed in many evangelical circles known as Open Theism. One of the primary teachings of this doctrine is that God does not know in advance everything humans will do. God knows the past and present in complete detail, they argue, but His knowledge of the future is limited to how we respond. That is, God can’t know what we humans will do until we do it. In short, proponents of this view have identified nearly 40 passages of Scripture they believe prove that God isn’t who we think Him to be.

Does this align with our knowledge of Scripture? No, it does not. The last time I checked, the whole Bible from Genesis to Revelation points to a God that acts according to a predetermined plan (1 John 3:20). He is not surprised, nor does He take risks (Gal. 3:8-9). Romans 8:28-38 talks about God who foreknew, predestined, justified, and glorified His redeemed people from all eternity. God’s purposes are eternal (Eph. 3:11), but He can intervene in history, just as He planned, decreed, and determined before the foundation of the world for Christ to die (Rev 13:8).

We will examine this issue in more detail tomorrow.

Romans 11:33-36 “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how fathomless his ways! 34 For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? 35 Or who has first given to God, that God needs to repay him? 36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever! Amen.”
