Does anyone know, of a "worst case scenario" for Global Warming?

    Hi there,

So I actually mailed my government about this and did not get an answer: is there a "worst case scenario" for Global Warming?

If we just keep using resources, at the rate we are, will we pollute the Earth beyond all reasonable use? Or is there a slow ebb of fossil fuels that will eventually take second place to renewable energy sources? How much pressure are we under?

I never hear about the pros and cons of Global Warming, it's always "alarm! catastrophe!", but no detail?

    Thanks, for your help.

Pro: There will be more water
Con: Cities and islands might go under

Pro: It won't be as cold in winter in some areas
Con: It will be hotter in the hottest areas

Pro: Can't think of a pro for this one...
Con: Coral reefs will be bleached

There was a study about the reefs actually that was interesting. It said overtime, that the oceans will become more acidic. Maybe this is where you find the worst case scenario that has scientific evidence behind it?

    Ocean Acidification

There's also the case with the vegans saying that the CO2 levels are caused by all the methane gas from cattle farms...

The other concerning thing was last night on the news it said we were all drinking plastic now in our water. But that's non-related to climate change. That's a plastic issue.

I do hope someone invents something to help the situation. Maybe someone could turn plastic into electricity? Or turn plastic into something...

Pro: Because water has expanded it will be lighter for the same volume. A bucket of water will not be as heavy to carry.

Con: Sometimes (Northern Hemisphere) Winter will be waaay colder and snowier than normal. (Don't believe me? - look up Polar Vortex - Yesss, Global Warming CAN make it colder)

Pro: My swimmers/togs/bathers/budgie smugglers will be whiter than white. :)

haha I like the white swimmers comment.

The question is will you be able to wear bleached swimmers in the Northern Hermisphere? lol The other question is, will swimmers disintegrate in the water?
I think this could also be a worst case scenario as well due to the acidity of the oceans.

Bucket of water one is interesting.

It's the main reason the oceans are rising. Warm water expands to take up more volume hence your average bucket of warm water is lighter than a similar bucket of cold water (and the oceans rise).

People often think that it's melting sea ice which is upping the sea level. Not true. Try putting a couple of ice cubes in water and check the level difference after the ice has melted. It will be the same. Glacial ice is different since it isn't already floating in the sea. If lots of glaciers (continue to) melt, the added water will up the sea level.

That would probably be Earth turning to something like Venus....

"Studies have suggested that billions of years ago Venus's atmosphere was much more like Earth's than it is now, and that there may have been substantial quantities of liquid water on the surface, but after a period of 600 million to several billion years,[62] a runaway greenhouse effect was caused by the evaporation of that original water, which generated a critical level of greenhouse gases in its atmosphere.[63] Although the surface conditions on Venus are no longer hospitable to any Earth-like life that may have formed before this event, there is speculation on the possibility that life exists in the upper cloud layers of Venus, 50 km (31 mi) up from the surface, where the temperature ranges between 303 and 353 K (30 and 80 °C; 86 and 176 °F) but the environment is acidic.[64][65][66]"

The worst case scenario just depends on your imagination. Climate Science future projections are based on agenda + imagination anyway. Just assume "The Earth Explodes!" is not bad enough and dream bigger.

Great. When I get to live on Venus I'll remember this post.

In the meanwhile ….back on Earth.

I'm talking to myself - this a bad sign.

I may have been unnecessarily confusing in my water comments.

For any lurkers let me explain:
    • Warm water expands. Warmer water takes up more space because the water molecules are further apart due to the energy input (the 'warmness').
    • Frozen water also expands compared to not-frozen water. This is related to the crystal lattice structure taken on by frozen water. Once again the molecules are further apart.

So... we have a weird situation where warm water has more volume than cooler water and frozen water has more volume than not-frozen water.

Don't blame me. I'm just the messenger. :(

Thanks - but as soon as I heard about "sulphuric acid" and the CO2 atmosphere I withdrew my application. :(

You've almost (almost) convinced me it might be worthwhile. If you can do something about the science denialists I'm almost (almost) ready to join - providing haemorrhoids are not a problem for interplanetary spaceflight. :(

David Brin's book Earth is his best case idea, and minus the black holes it is depressing. Massive loss of species, less usable water, cities flooded, less arable land. Not a good place for my future generations.

The worst case scenario is that the methane hydrate at the bottom of the world’s oceans begins to melt, releasing methane into the atmosphere. Methane is ten times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas.

The more the hydrate melted, the more the temperature would rise, and so the more it would melt - in a run away feedback loop which couldn’t be halted until the Earth was an oven.
