  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does anybody here have Hermit Crabs?

I had a Hermit Crab when I was younger but I don't remember much about it. All I remember is that one day it climbed out of it's plastic tank (don't ask me how it climbed up a slipper plastic side like that) and we found it's outer shell on the table next to the tank. It was the strangest thing. It either climbed out of the tank, shedded its shell, and got loose or it climbed out of the tank and died leaving a strange outer shell behind. I really have no idea because I don't know that much about them.

You know, they only take off their shells when there in search of a new one. They'll use anything they find. Thimbles, little bottles so it's possible he used something in your house. Anyway, I've never heard of a hermit crab climbing a plastic wall with nothing to grab on. It is strange. I had a hermit crab once when I was 5. My mom took care of it. She forgot to give him water one day. Later that evening, we found him on his back, not moving...

I so want a hermit crab!!! My roommate and I were at the mall the otherday when we saw a booth with hermit crabs. They had really cool painted shells. We were going to get a blue and lime green one (to match our dorm room) but then we remembered we could only have fish. (Stupid dorm rules). We asked our CA if he thought it would be ok, but he said no. I thought it would be so much fun though. They're kind of cute.

Yeah, hermit crabs rock. They are cute. I can't believe that guy said no. What are they going to do? Make too much noise? (In case anybody didn't know, they don't make any noise). Their easier to take care of then fish anways. You can usually find them at any pet store. They sell for pretty cheap too. I love the fact that they have painted shells. You can either buy the shells already painted (their pretty expensive though), or you can paint them your self. I do both. A majority of the shells for my crabs though have been painted by yours truly. I use nail polish. Did you know that if taken well care of, hermit crabs can live for up to 75 years?! I once read on the internet about some lady who got her first 3 hermit crabs when she was 12, and she still has them - she's 32 now!!

I've grown up with hermit crabs (and scars on my hands...I was always fond of the gargantuan ones ;)). They're so cute (if you close one eye and squint with the other) and cuddly (if you wrap them in a sock).

We let ours out on the porch, and we'd find them an hour later halfway up the screen door. :p

I live near a tourist town, so every blasted beach store has them, and most of them live in HORRIBLE conditions. They have huge bowls of water with deep lips (crabs are supposed to have only a sponge...if they climb in the bowl and can't get out, they eventually drown), and no food. And there's usually at LEAST ten or twenty lying dead on the bottom of the cage. I used to have about six, and I kept them in my room. I had them in a glass terrarium, but when they would walk around at night, the pebbles and shells would hit the glass...pretty loud for little crabs.

I also had one called Slim. He was about 5 inches around, and three inches across. He was missing his dominate claw (which is why I bought him...no way was I getting another evil monster with a pincher the size of Texas). Ahh, the memories...

They're SO cheap and easy to maintain, too. A little expensive to start out, but once you get them food, pebbles, and a home, they're great.
